Once you get your lights, be careful who you pull over...

I think this sort of thing happens more often than we know. Its really unfortunate that in this day and age, you have to question the authenticity of an individual identifying themselves as a police officer.

You see, when using a courtesy light, you don't pull over WITH the guy in front of you. You pass them. That's the whole idea. So it has nothing to do with volunteers. It's a freak who wants to pretend he's a cop.

"Lane was driving an SUV fitted with flashing lights when he tried to stop the off-duty New York police detective"

Now what are the odds that this guy is a volunteer EMT?

Having grown up a couple of miles from where this happened, I can tell you there is a good chance that this was a volley. LI is one of the largest volley systems in the world. Yup, there are many whackers or as they are called there, buffs.

... My dept. as well as most other major depts. throughout the country, has a long list of "Police impersonators"... we have a detective assigned to check any reports of "unmarked cars making traffic stops, in our jurisdiction.... it is a very common problem,, and we have come up with many fakers with criminal records, guns, badges , lights sirens,, in their cars, etc.... Aggravated unlicensed operation in NYS means he was driving on a SUSPENDED or revoked license,,, this guy should not have bben behind the wheel in the first place...

We have permits, issued by the Pennsylvania State Police, and they have a list at the dispatch desk. Name, VIN, DLN, Plates, # of Lights, Color, reason, vehicle info, address, phone #, etc. Never have any problems. People know that the state police don't use just blue lights. They have red, white and blue vector bars or red pancake lights. They also know, here anyway, we don't have local cops. If it isn't a marked car, it's not a cop.

Only whackers know that.

Your average old lady doesn't.
