What Do You Carry On Your Person?

Recommended Posts

Noahmedic: I think we get the point of your last post. You no longer drive an ambulance-you ride in a hangar queen......big deal. Im sure you offer autographs on those business cards too.

Im glad to hear that "flight"medicine require so much more crap to carry in your flight suit than down to earth medicine most of us practice.

Stethoscope? Do you actually try to auscultate in the aircraft? Or is that a PR tool to show off with when you are not practicing "Flight" medicine?

wow, did you get out of the wrong side of the bed this morning or just not getting any?

He wants Some.

Anyhoo, as usual you damn people are making way too much sense. I had a big trauma the other day and boy did I ever wish I had another pair of shears to give to the FF so he could assist in exposuring the pt. Sigh, so now I carry two pairs, as well as the hospital gown in the cupboard. 8)

While not an EMT I thought it'd be interesting to you to tell you what I carry on my person as a junior hockey trainer (jr hockey is about two levels below NHL).

1) Paramedic sheers, if you ever have tried I cut any hockey equptment off with anything else but good quality sheers or a hoffman knife you know why I carry expensive ones.

2) Nitrate Gloves, 1 pair on during the games, 3 in my pocket.

3) Gauze pads + blood stop strips.

4) Pressure bandages (1 of each size) for major cuts)

5) CPR mask with O2 nipple

6) oral airways, jaw thrusts and head tilts dont work with hockey helmets on very often.

7) penlight

8) Pop ice pack

9) Roll bandages x2

I carry all of this in a asspack, sheers go in a special easy to get at pocket since i use them the most.

On duty I carry the radio, my alpha pager (call info. comes across this), and ambulance keys (unit has to be locked at all times when we're not in it). The minitor pager stays in the ambulance (we're rarely out of it anyway  ) and when we are at a post, I monitor the radio. Gloves are in the front and I grab a pair when we arrive on scene. Shears, pen lights, flashlights, and my personal stethoscope are all in the back and easily within reach when needed. I can't stand a bunch of stuff hanging from my belt, and this system has worked very well for me for 9 years. :)

Edit: My personal bag on the other hand contains just about everything you can think of (I work 14 hour shifts). Books, pens, magazines, gum, make-up (I know, I know...), several medications ( ), 2-3 extra drinks (water, soda), other female "items"...hehe...small containers of disinfectant (for funky pts., not me!), etc., etc., etc. I come prepared! :)

  • 4 months later...

Add the following to what I carry

one small pencil ( both ink pens died when trying to take notes)

CPR microshield ( talked with a crew from another service. They went to a call for one problem and ended up with two different patients. The second patient went into respiratory distress and one of the crew members started mouth to mouth without mask or shield)
