If you want to talk about confusing:

The ambulance is referred to as a truck, IE "Get in the truck."

On the radio, the ambulance is referred to as a Unit, IE "Unit 11, respond to blah blah blah".

When referring to a specific ambulance, they are trucks, IE "Truck 1 is going to be Unit 11 today."

On the radio, a truck refers to the captain/lieutenant's vehicle IE, "Truck 11 is responding with Unit 11 to 311 North Hills."

I still call the ambulance a truck, though cause I assume what you ment is what we call the ambulance is a casual sense. (The first example)

I run at the University of Virginia with a department called Medic 5, the UVA helicopter/ground transport truck is called Pegasus so my coworker suggested we call our ambulance the mythological father of this creature- "Poseidion". That way, whenever we drive by them we can shout "Hey Pegasus! Who's your Daddy!"

Dude, even as a former student of Classical History, that was one of the nerdiest things I've ever read. Come on man, we're trying to make the profession look cool. Now rename your ambulance "Ozzy Rules" and try again.

The official name is "Medic [number]" So, for radio callsign, paperwork, documentation, it's Medic 31, or whichever truck you're on. The BLS crews are all numbered, starting off with a letter designation standing for their station. ex: "Kilo-74".

On the radio, numbers are typically all that's used. unfortunately, people aren't bright enough to figure out to not have a "November 31" on the same day you have a "Medic 31" on.

Other than that, 'Get in the truck.'
