A/TCEMS

Hello,

I have a strong desire to work for the Ausin / Travis County EMS service. Eventually on the Special Ops and rescue side.

I am currently working for a relatively busy paid-on-call fire department as a firefighter/EMT-B. And for a private ambulance company that has the contract for part of the fire area. I am taking an IV-Tech class (state's version of basic adding IV, D50, Narcan, and non-assisted nitro). And I start paramedic in January.

My question is how can I start now to sweeten my pot so to say. Make me more qualified for a position with them?

Thanks for any info you may have,

Kevin

The private company is in the big metro area next to my town. With them I average 18-20 calls in a 24 hour shift.

Keep doing what you are doing. Study hard. Don't get cocky. Go do some rideouts with them to start the networking process.

And, remember, this industry is small. Don't piss anyone off 'cuz he/she might just be your commander in the next job.

From what I've seen (I've been looking at working here in W. TX for 3-5 years as a medic before I try to get on with ATcEMS), they don't care too much about FF, they're more interested in LPs with good, solid experience and the appropriate add-on certs.

Thanks guys. I am mostly doing the fire side with the department I am on as a side. I am primerally focused on EMS. What additional certs should I get passed the paramedic school ones (ACLS, BTLS, PALS)?

How do I go about getting ride time?

If you're a medic you pretty much have to have ACLS and PALS/PEPP/whatever the NAEMT's pedi course is. I hope as a medic you have PHTLS instead of BTLS. AMLS might be good as well.

But really it all comes down to getting some solid career medic experience. BEcome a good, educated medic.
