Advice for new CE topics

Recommended Posts

...I am a training officer at Care Ambulance in Orange County, CA. We do our own inhouse CE's. We pride ourselves in our training dept., but we need more subjects for the CE classes. We would like to teach abstract classes, not the basic EMT curriculum that is currently available. This month we have a classe on 5150, where we have an officer coming in and a PETeam member as speakers for the class. A Prehospital Emergency for the Peds Pt(PEPP), a class on Biabetes, and one on CVA's where our guess speaker is a Neuro surgeon from UCI medical center. I would like some ideas on classes that we can put on, on subjects that are abstract, that are touchy, that some instructors would not touch with a 10 foot pole. We try to educate the emt's as much as possible. These classes are open to the public, or other emt's that are not employed by our company. Oh yeah, these classes are free, with CE's for the students. Your help is greatly appreciated. Thanx in advanced for your ideas on classes.

There is a nearby hospital that taught a class on natural remedies from different cultures, and how those remedies might be mistaken as child or elder abuse. There might be very little mentioned of this in current EMT curriculum, and much less a class on this. An EMT instructor might touch on a certain subject, but will not go into depth about it. I hope I answered your question.

Is it possible to have an AMLS(Advanced Medical Life Support) class put on anywhere around there? This is only available to be audited but is great knowledge for even EMT's to have. Also, a basic 12 or 15 lead awareness class is a great one to put on as well.

We have also found around our service, our EMT's have greatly benefited from a basic pharm. course. Not too in depth as if you were teaching a medic course. But a course that helps the EMT's feel more comfortable and aware of the meds carried on the trucks.

I once inquired about Lamaze classes for EMTs, and was rebuffed by the agency, saying, only with a pregnant partner. As I am male, unmarried, and very careful, I didn't qualify.

Perhaps you can get an OB/Labor specialist to give a class on how to assist the "coach" in a Lamaze birth?

I recently attended a CE class at Huntington Memorial Hospital in Pasadena. The class was put on by an Investigator from the LA Co. Coroners office. It was very graffic, but it gave insight that was never covered in any other CE or EMT class. See if the OC Coroner has something similar.
