Recommended Posts

hey im just curious if anyone knows of a local ambulance company that runs 911 calls located in Orange County, Ca or Long Beach? I'm looking for a job that runs 911 instead of the basic transports which offer no good exp what so ever.. if so let me know!! thanks!!!

Just FYI, in the OC, the two are exactly the same thing. Neither offer any good experience whatsoever.

I was there a month ago. Primary BLS 911 coverage for those areas are held by Care Ambulance, and Mccormick. As for experience, bls continues to be supervised by FD ALS, and the pay is less than meager. Move or go FD. >.<

The 911 companies in Orange County are Care (most of north OC and a lot of LA now), Schaffer (Costa Mesa), Doctors (Laguna, Irvine), Medix (southern OC plus Seal Beach), and Emergency (Brea plus another city that I can't remember). Essentially 911 is just doing what the fire medics tell you to do. Expect to show up second for well over 75% of the calls since the area is over saturated with medic engines compared to ambulances and fire always responds code 3 (the ambulance may not). Personally, I'd rather be on a dedicated CCT unit (RNs and/or RTs) than on a 911 unit in OC.

Care is now taking over Costa Mesa, and has the 911 transport contract for a large portion of LA County. I worked there for a little over two years. It is a good company, as far as ambulance goes. Most of their rigs are new and even the old ones are well maintained. If you have to work in OC, IMO it's by far the best choice. Management is actually supportive of the field employees and while pay isn't great, it is decent with plentiful OT. Expect to spend a few months on BLS, but you still back up the 911 units.

Interesting. I've always heard that Schaffer wanted out of that contract. Do you know if Lynch is keeping the backup contract (not that it really matters with the amount of units Care has)?
