  2. In BC if we suspect any type of abuse to a minor it is off to the Child welfare we go..........No if and or buts. We use to have to say our suspitions to the hospital staff but because of incidents of things not being reported it is now up to us.

Personally I would go and have that off the record chat and hopefully someone will look into it.

  3. So before I started the response I went back to original post from Doc. I wanted to makes sure that the real original question before us was really about gun control and the shooting from one week ago.

It has been proven that hand guns kill more people than anything else, well that may be true it is not normally a hand gun used in school or mall shootings. So to me that is a mute point and we are talking about a specific type of crime.

We have discussed mental health as an issue. This is very true and I dont know of any country that addresses all mental health issues little own the one I live in. The other thing with mental health is that most people will not understand it unless they have lived through it. And with that being said, the common person would not know what the Red flags are for a person who has the potential to do this crime, but really do any of us. Would the general public start call the authoraties just because someone is acting a little off. So unless there is good help out there for those then really this isn't going to stop. It has been my experience that those with mental health issues start to feel good and then go off the medications that are making the feel that way. This topic as far as I can see is like a revolving door.

Now I think the most dissappointing thing of all is the NRA. They are going to work at having every school have armed guards. They say the only way to stop the bad guy with a gun is to have a good guy with a gun, and lets do the shoot first and ask questions later. I couldn't imagine taking my child to school and seeing the guns. If that happens it would make me feel like it did when I went to Mexico (no offence Defib) seeing the police with automatice weapons, it didn't make me feel safer, it made me feel more afraid. So lets say this happens are we going to be sure that every security guard is going to have the proper clearences and behaviour tests done. Im sure there will be the lets go talk to the neighbours interviews for these security guards, but lets be real, mental health problems can happen later in life and who is to say you just haven't put the gun in the ticking time bomb.

I don't know what the answer is to this and trust me I know Canada has its share of problems. The one thing I like that Toronto is doing is that doors will be locked and there will be camera's at them so if someone wants in the school they have to be let in. Now dont get me wrong there are alot of problems with that idea like for safety in fires etc, and that this gunman shot his way in through a window, maybe we need to have bullet proof windows installed.

  4. And who deteremines what the average citizen needs? As Chase has continually pointed out handguns have been used in more crimes than so called assualt rifles, so are you going to take away all handguns to?

Yes I agree hand guns are used more in crime as a whole. But I think what everyone is trying to say is in these cases the person or persons are using high powered assult rifles along with the amo. A hand gun can not hold 100 rounds of ammo or more. I also feel that it is GUN CONTROL not BANNING all guns that is needed.

As for other things like bomb making materials, if you dont have a farm you dont get high amounts of fertilizer. If you try to order it you get a visit from the men in black.

There is no way we are ever going to stop this but if one assult is taken away from a nut bar and it saves one person then that is a good start.

So Spenac I have a question for you, Who do you feel should deternmind what the average citizen needs? Do you think the average joe needs assult rifles and other things that will cause mass human carnage. Please dont take it as personal attack I just want to know what your opinion is.

  5. Perhaps I did not explain my point clearly? I am not buying all the comparisions I see people making to countries such as Norway and Switzerland where gun ownership is high but gun violence is low. Unfortunately, I see people pointing to these countries as justification for the United States to not consider changes. However, what many people fail to appreciate is that the high rates of ownership come with many laws, stipulations and regulations. However, I rarely see people point that side of the coin out. Once again, this makes the situation in the United States unique among other "post-industrial" nations.

Thank you for making this clearer. I think what has to be noted is that it maybe because of these many laws etc that there is a lower chance for lack of a better word of these mass shootings happening, but then again maybe not. I do not think that guns should be banned but I do think that there is no reason for the average joe to own an assult rifle EVER. I do think that there should be more regulations in the States for people to own guns and maybe the back ground checks should be to the point of trying to aquire a security clearance, where they go and talk to the neighbours etc.

For those that want to go on a killing spree they are going to get the gun anyways and that is just a fact of life, but if they are illegal then maybe they will be just that little bit harder to get.

It is very difficult to actually think straight about the whole thing as when you do all you see are beautiful little children that will never grow up. I have actually been avoiding news for a few days but today when I read the story of the little 6 yr old that pretended to be dead, and then ran out of the school covered in blood saying "Mommy Im okay but my friends are dead" just breaks my heart.

  6. However, at least some of Mexico's problem comes from guns smuggled in from the United States. Also, regarding Norway, I'm not keen to use outlier events. Particularly, when said events are not uncommon in the United States.

Can you explain what you mean about Norway. I dont know what you mean by outlier events. The two events have alot of similarities, but different countries and different gun laws.

  7. Living in an area where we do alot of hunting and fishing I have to ask the american people why do they feel the need to have assult rifles? I do truely understand the right to bear arms but if this ammendment is not working in this day and age maybe it is time for it to be changed.

I do not think that it was guns that killed these kids, it was the person that was pulling the trigger, but with that being said if there were no legal guns in his house would this tradgety happen? I think we could beat this to death Ya or Nay on guns but what has to happen is that people have to take responsibilty for their actions. In Canada if you have guns you are suppose to lock them up in a secure cabinet. You have to have a FAC license in order to buy ammo. There are some safe guards that can be put in place.

Im not personally afraid of guns and truely dont look at people and think are they carrying a gun, and are the going to shoot me. I was in the military and my father was a hunter so I have been taught to handle guns with respect. My children have been taught to shoot guns and treat them with respect even the pellet gun had many lessons attached to it.

I looked at our elemntry school where the my sons went to and the good thing is that evey classroom has an exit door to the outside. I know that this is not possible eveywhere but maybe someone should look into getting an escape route for each class.

  8. This, apparently is an actual letter received by the Canadian Passport Office, from an irate Newfoundlander attempting to renew his passport .

    Dear Sirs,

I'm in the process of renewing my passport, and still cannot believe this. How is it that Bell-Alliant has my address and telephone number and knows that I bought a friggin satellite dish from them back in 1977, and yet, the Canadian Government is still asking me where I was friggin born and on what date.

For Christ sakes, do you guys do this by hand ?

    • My birth date you have on my pension checks, • and it is on all the income tax forms I've filed for the past 30 years.

    • It is on my Health card,

    • my driving license,

    • my car insurance,

    • on the last eight damn passports I've had,

    • on all those stupid customs declaration forms I've had to fill out before being allowed off the plane over the last 30 years, and

    • all those insufferable census forms.

Would somebody please take note, once and for all, that my mother's name is Mary Anne, my father's name is Robert and I'd be absolutely astounded if that ever changed between now and when I die!!!!!!

I apologise, I'm really pissed off this morning.

Between you an' me, I've had enough of this bullshit !

You send the application to my house, then you ask me for my address!!!!

What is going on? Do you have a gang of Neanderthal arseholes workin' there ?

Look at my damn picture. Do I look like Bin Laden ?

I don't want to dig up Yasser Arafat, for shit sakes.

I just want to go and park my arse on some sandy beach somewhere.

And would someone please tell me, why would you give a shit whether I plan on visiting a farm in the next 15 days ?

If I ever got the urge to do something weird to a chicken or a goat,

believe you me, you'd be the last people I'd want to tell!

Well, I have to go now, 'cause I have to go to the other end of the friggin city to get another copy of my birth certificate, to the tune of $35 .

Would it be so complicated to have all the services in the same spot

to assist in the issuance of a new passport the same day ? ?

Nooooooooooooo , that'd be too damn easy and maybe make sense.

You'd rather have us running all over the place like chickens with our heads cut off, then have to find some arsehole to confirm that it's really me on the damn picture - you know, the one where we're not allowed to smile ?!( bureaucratic morons )

Hey, do you know why we couldn't smile if we wanted to? Because we're totally pissed off!

    Signed

    An Irate Canadian Citizen.

P.S. Remember what I said above about the picture and getting someone to confirm that it's me ?

Well, my family has been in Newfoundland since 1497 and I've been a Canadian Citizen since 1949.

.......... I have served in the military for something over 30 years and have had full security clearances over 25 of those years enabling me to undertake highly secretive missions all over the world.

......... However, I have to get someone 'important' to verify who I am

    - you know, someone like my doctor –

  9. I thought conversion disorder, too, as one possibility. Mental health breakdowns/conditions can be wide ranging in their presentations. The brain is a funny thing and there's no telling how certain events/conditions will affect people.

I'm curious why they didn't do a head CT earlier. Of course, nobody can really answer that. It's just a random question I thought as I read the case.

I live on a pacific island that has no CT Scan, so we get to medivac them out for one and in her case it took about 48 hrs to get her out.

  10. Since I was not the medic that did this call I wont do it as a senerio. Once Im done giving the information My question all of you is if you have ever heard of a Mental Breakdown that has stroke like deficits.

    40 yr old female

Went for a nap and husband went to check on her, she was having a seizure that lasted about 3 mins. Ambulance called and transfered to hospital.

Pt stayed for observation. During the night she was confused and had 2 more seizures that lasted the same amount of time. After the second one the nero testing showed left sided weakness, weak grips, unable to stand, facial droop and when she stuck out her toung went right. She was feverish 37 and rosey in color. She was warm to touch. She was very emotional also.

We picked up CCT and brought them in. While there and after good doses of Dilantin, adivan and gravol she had 2 more seizures. The one medic said this could be a tumor and he has seen this before. So off she went to the city and the CT Scan showed nothing so they did a MRI the next day and again nothing. I should also mention this had happen before years ago but was only one seizure, no deficits and nothing found.

The Pt came back and I happen to be in the city and saw her at the airport. Now my medic eye noticed that she was still very emotional and was dragging her left leg a bit with a limp. She was holding a cup with her left hand and dropped it. One of her friends saw me later and said it was diagnosed as a Mental breakdown.

I am not a Dr. by any means but I have never heard of a Mental Breakdown that creates and retaines the stroke like deficits. Has anyone here?

    Thanks Happy
