  1. I am testing this weekend ACP and of course second guessing myself on a few things could I ask if a patient has TBI in order for me to hyperventilate at 20 breaths/min would the patient have to exhibit all symptoms of herniation syndrome. Cushings reflex, blown pupils and extensor posturing or just 2 of the 3 cushings reflex and blown pupils for example. Second question, suspected head injury with or without icp I can give 12.5 g D50W slow iv push and if needed I can give other half my question how long should I wait before giving second dose if needed? Sorry for the silly questions up until today I felt comfortable guess it's just pretesting jitters! Thank you, Andy.
  2. I am going on my first practicum as an EMT in Alberta, I only get once chance to get through it, needless to say that makes me very nervous.
  3. Hello all, I am waiting for practicum placement and I have started to review. I am not sure how in-depth I need to go, maximizing the time I spend studying is my goal.I want to make a good impression and not cause additional stress or drama for my preceptor and not make a fool of myself. How much hand holding is there once I enter into my practicum and how much training will I be provided by my preceptor if any? What topics are key and expected to know inside and out. I appreciate any information or advice this forum can provide me.
  4. Thank you Siffaliss that link has some good info I appreciate your assistance. Andy.
  5. Hello members I am trying to locate information about the history of ems in Alberta for a project that I need to complete for class, I have searched the web and checked libraries and haven't found anything any idea when ems first started in Alberta where I might look to find such information. thanks you, Andy.
  6. Yesterday I met with CCEMS to discuss comments made about the school by ambulance services I visited recently, the correct thing to do was give them the opportunity to discuss and explain those issues.I had the opportunity to meet with the new program director who is also one of the lead instructors, he appears to be a very educated and experienced practician. We talked for a good hour showing and explaining to me changes that are being implemented this July and those that are in place as of April. CCEMS will be reapplying for CMA accreditation and now recognize the importance of such certification. Now using Mosby paramedic book and ECG the easy way, they are implementing computer based testing (laptops will be required for the course & they have laptop for use also), all lectures from classes will be available as pod casts for students to download they have other server based resources now available to the students via lan and wan server. Chris the new program director is very committed to changing the reputation of CCEMS and also very dedicated to the success of each student only time will tell how successful they become.I was very happy and excited about the changes implemented. I have decided to attend CCEMS this July to complete my EMT training, I will update this post as I progress through the program.
  7. Hello all, I am thinking of participating in the EMT program they are offering this July 5 2010 in Edmonton Alberta. I received my letter of acceptance last week so I decided to visit the local Ambulance station to ask what their opinion is good or bad when it comes to Canadian College of EMS. The 5 EMT that I talked with all had said the same thing about Canadian College of EMS and that was to "stay away" oddly enough no one could give me a reason for their comment. One EMT did say it has been difficult for them to place students for their practicum. I am reaching out to members here for opinions on the school and list reasons for negative or positive feedback if you have any. One thing said to me by a staff member of the school, that they are in transition and have been making changes to the program for the past year it is getting very difficult t make any kind of decision about training. Seems like everyone of the schools I have visited say all the right things and leave me with a good impression about their facility any input you can provide me will be greatly appreciated. Andy.
  8. I would like to thank everyone who responded to my question excellent information and answered all of my questions. thank you so much, Andy.
  9. I have goggled this topic and haven't really found what I am looking for, I have decided to train in Alberta due to the delay in practicum placement and JI's training backlog of future Primary Care Paramedics. Would it be possible to have a Licensed Primary Care Paramedic (British Columbia) and a Licensed Emergency Medical Technician (Alberta) currently working in urban settings to list their protocols they were licensed and trained to use (drug administration, airway management, cardiac monitoring etc...) for comparison. The schools I have contacted all list the course as EMT/PCP knowing full well there are differences none have given me an honest comparison. I would like to come back to BC once I am done my training and Licensing in Alberta, what concerns me is that my training will not be recognized and I will have to redo some or all of it. I apologizes if this topic has already been covered my search has found some posting but they were not very detailed I have called ACP and EMA both not very helpful referred me to their websites. I did manage to find a protocol listing on the EMA website not sure how up to date it is. thank you, Andy.
