  1. So I was just in refersher and they did a great presentation by (Col. John Holcomb i think), on Traumatic injuries and the use of tourniquets. He was the trauma doc in Solmalia and did several tours in Iraq... He and his research team advocates the use of tourniquets for many extremity injuries.. Anyway, I was unable to find it on the NREMT.org, but according to one of the instructors the NEW NREMT Bleeding control skills sheet now has a tourniquet as the #2 treatment after direct pressure does not work.... Fascinating, we in EMS have now come full circle.
  2. Ask this question in NY and you are bound to get an argument.. NYC got so bad they had to have the Mayors office do a flow sheet, if this emerg, then cops ,, if this than Fire,, etc.... LOL..
  3. Some additional details here: http://cms.firehouse.com/content/article/a...mp;sectionId=39
  4. The problem with this as someone already stated is that an EMT with a gun is seen as a cop not an EMT.... I have found that before I became a cop I could often reationalize with the person .. "heah lets calm down before the cops come, you dont want them beating up on you" Psychological verbage usually helped the situation..... I can see a lot of role confustion if you give emts guns for Self Defense, better to have units wait for PD, I am curious what type of call this was dispathed as.... unk. condition man down ? what
  5. A resume is different from an application. If you applying to a job, and they ask for ACLS, PALS, etc, by all means put them in,, however on a resume it is appropriate just to list them and say at the bottom of the resume "certifications available upon request"... As someone else said a resume is supposed to be 1 page,, save it for relevant work Hx. If they want to hire you they will ask for your cards.
  6. If i were in that service I would fight thie tooth and nail...... nothing good ever comes from a firemonkey takeover of EMS. NOTHING NAADA, ZIP ZILCH.
  7. Maryland protocols just changed (in past 2? years) from SQ to IM Epi,,, 1:1,000
  8. How about holding people accountable instead of drilling holes and buying locks... I have heard of some systems that use a swipe card to access the cabinets, then officers can document who was the last person in which compartment..... We check the rigs once a week, and we hae a list of inventory when meds expire, and our medication coordinator changes out the espired meds. If used on a call, the crew chief is reposnsible for replacement from the ER or house stock.
  9. OHHHHHHHHHHHH,, traditional police, Firefighter, Paramedic, and the allied health profession jobs Do not ??????????????? This whole Public Safety agency thing is in the high divorce catagory IMHO
  10. There are MANY MANY Federal LE agencies,,,,, from Border PAtrol to PArk Ranger, to US PArk Police, to Capitol Police, the Secret Service, Agent or officer... Most federal LE jobs require you to be appointed either before your 37th or 40th birthday....some are investigative... others are more traditional chasing bad guys, some a a lot of drug and gun lock ups,, others do more protective security type work... depends on what uyou wnat to do ...... good luck,,, whateveryou decide i suggest riding or interning with the agency you think you want to work for, before you apply.... DO NOT BELIEVE what you see in movies about ANY agency, whether it is U.S Marshalls, the Fugitive, to Secret Service, to BP, etc...
  11. Federal service has many pluses....... COLA pay raises EVERY year........ salary is decent
  12. I'm not sure what you re talking about ?... graphic violence then a soup commercial. ? sooo what ?
  13. You know the problem is this.... I worked for NYC*EMS during several of the "sick outs" and unfortunatly while many people participated, there were many EMTS, Paramedics, Dispatchers, etc, who not only worked, but MADE THEMSELVES available for OVERTIME.. Thats right in 1988-89 before cell phones were readily avaialbe, many EMS people who were off duty and at home ,, answered their phones(instead of letting answering machines pick up) , and came in for OT when others were risking termination to bang in sick..... So I would say with people like that out there.... there is VERY LITTLE chance of that working. IMHO. sorry
  14. I was not questioning anyones intent... I understand that like the Papal visit, major sporting events, many EMS folks who do not work these venues on a regular basis are curious about how we prepare.... BUT, having worked the Papal visit in both NYC and DC, several inaugurals and many other NSSE, there is a proper forum to talk about this. Most of the EMS plans, while not TOP Secret, are designated FOUO, and do not disseminate to the public or press..... The reason for this is or should be obvious... Terrorists are stealing ambulances, fire trucks police cars and other vehicles and using them to penetrate security..... All I was saying was LETS NOT GIVE OR PLAY BOOK, or leave it lying around where the other side can see it. Stay safe,,,, Former
  15. That is a kind of sensitive question to ask in a public forum,, dont you think ??? There are reasons why there has not been much press on that topic. OPSEC
  16. From strictly a Law Enforcement perspective the charges are "technically" correct.... I dunno if they are trying to send a message to the students, or they really believe the charges are appropriate... As for if an adult sends naked pictures, then it is not considered pornagraphy, just nude pics. The whole "child porn" act is designed to enforce internet and other stuff, and is specifically for children under 18 years old..... My guess is that this will all be plead out dismissed dropped down, gotten rid of ...etc. ...... I do not see convictions in this case.... from what appears to be foolish teenage horseplay... Now if the boys had been peeking thru a hole in the wall and took photos of the girls w/o permission, I could see the whoel child pron thing sticking.... Just my thoughts as a seasoned cop.
  17. Your "best bet" is to RUN AWAY...... FAST. Go work somewhere else, where the pay, benefits and retirement is a whole lot better... If I had to do all over,,,, maybe go th MD School, PA ,, something liek that....
  18. Yes it happens,, and there goes the theory at 2 pilots arebetter than 1 ... This A/c had a pilot and co-pilot on board. obviously what ever happened, that did not help to mitigate it.
  19. I have a friend who has hotel rooms available for those Flying in VERY CONVIENENT. Like 10 minutes from Airport. No this in NOT in DOWNTOWN.. It is in Lithicum, about 10-15 minute light rail ride...from the Inner Harbor and convention center. Hotel provides free shuttle service to light rail and free breakfast... I think also free p/u at BWI Airport. I dunno what the rooms in downtown/ inner harbor are going for but last I checked they were like 300+ per night... These rooms are about 1/2 that,.,,, about 15 per... now if you get totally smashed you can not stunble back to your hotel room, but for those coming in ayb plane to BWI, and looking to save $$ this might be a good option... It is a Spring Hill Suites by Marriott so it is not a dump.... Whoever is coordinating this pm me and ill get you the details, my buddy says if you/we call him with a group name, he can set up a block of rooms at a discounted rate...... Let me know ......
  20. Like foe example the suspect with a butcher knife who was shot multiple times with a .38 and he still managed to run forward and stab an officer to death,, he ended up with i think 18 plus holes in him,, ask the widow of that officer if she thinks the cops shot him too many times... or The cops in NYC that went to a family dispute and one officer was thrown thru a plate glasss table lacerated his femoral artery and bled out right in the suspects living room..... bet that officers partner/wife wished thay had hit him harder before he threw the officer to his death... If I learned one thing when i am in a violent confrontation it is this,, do not give the bad guy a chance to get your gun. or stab you or choke oy. Hit him/her AS HARD as you can until you gain compliance. Hopefully the first or second shot will be enought to stop him, no 50%-75% you hit him with 100% full force and end it. We as police officers DO NOT GET PAID TO LOSE. Stay safe Former
  21. I equate this with the AACP allowing MD's to ask parents if guns are in the homes, and berate them about it.... Seems to me some left wing liberal doctors are overstepping their boundries... It took me to become a cop, and watch and hear all the horror stories to learn just what it takes to physically subdue a suspect high on crack or PCP... I remember being a street medic years ago and watching a police takedown literally from beginning to end and thinking boy they went too far, I then told one of the cops my impression and he explained why they did what they did and how it could have gone wrong... Armed with his side of the story so to speak, I changed my mind.... Absent plungers up rectums, and physically rubbing OC onto peoples eyes with Q-tips, or blatantly wailing away at someone who is surrendering,, you swing at me with a fist you are going to get hit with a stick, beanbag gun, pepper spray whatever... You come at me with a knife or gun, you WILL get shot... That is just the way it is.... (we do not have tasers).... life lessons from the front lines of law enforcement.... Ohh and PS, NEWSFLASH,,,, Suspects lie about cops beating them to try to get out of things...
  22. LOSAP, most states do it or i should say have it..... ask around before you join,, good luck .. Other states give tax breaks on homeowners taxes,, some give free training, you can definitely write off your gear, training uniforms, etc. if not provided.... etc....
  23. I was a young 18-19 y/o paramedic once... but that was a long time ago.
  24. Sorry My Canadian friend but i was talking to the starter of this thread....... The questions is qouted above....
  25. This is about a week or so old, but I have not seen it here yet,, I'm sorry if it is a double post, but I did search before posting and found nothing ... http://www.cnn.com/video/#/video/us/2008/1...d.in.death.wjla
