  1. CUSTOMER SERVICE is EXACTLY what we provide. Police and Fire Departments are just that, "Departments" ....The police investigate and prevent crime, and the Fire Dept. puts out fires and responds to emergencies, but Emergency Medical Services do just that provide a SERVICE... People in EMS, need to understand that our patients, are CUSTOMERS, when they get good quality service, thay are usually happy, when they get poor service, or rude provdiers arrive at their house, they are DISSATISFIED CUSTOMERS. As for your comment about there is a time for EMS providers to be les sthan polite WRONG. It is now obvious to me why your name is "Bieber".. Because you are YOUNG, and lack experience......... It is never OK to be "less than polite" as you put it because a patient is rambling on about something and you need "short concise answers" I suggest you go out and read Thom Dick's book "people care" and then revisist your attitude about cutting people off, and being less than polite. Ohh you are correct in saying that we do not install washing machines, I will give you that one.
  2. First off, congrats on passing.. Second can I talk you out of moving to NYC ??? FDNY hires EMTs all the time..... get your NYS-EMT card, get a Dl and get on the list..... Good luck.. PS most of the private ambulance companys in NYC are pretty bad..... just my opinion, do not kill the messenger. Thanks
  3. I could not open the youtube, but I too remember when NYC*EMS was fun ... NYC*EMS R.I.P. March 17, 1996..... The Borg has assimilated you. At least I am making a ton more money than I was back then...... SOO GLAD I LEFT the F*&^% Dummies of New York.
  4. So, basically you wnat oto be a BUFF, or WANKER. You want to put light and sirens in your POV and race to call like a _____________. This is a TERRIBLE idea, for all the reasons everyone previous to me posted, and for several others...... Unless you are inthe middle of nowhere, and the ambulance takes 45 minutes to get to the scene,,,,, as someone said, wouldn't you better served joining the local volunteer FD ????? Certifiaction, Insureance, equipment alone will run you ohhhh,,,,several hundred thousadns dollars, IMHO. go join the local VFD, get a ltter from the chief, and you can drive around with a flashing light in your car just like all the others..... It should make you feel important, and there you go, PROBLEM SOLVED.
  5. First of all my appologies for being gone soo long,,,,, work just takes priority..... I have been appointed to a teaching position at my P/T EMS unit and i am disturbed to say the least be the newer paramedics.... They do not seem to know how to speak with patients, they are abrupt, crass, and quite frankly obnoxious. I got to talking with some other officers, and we would like to find a good customer service training class. Years ago, before the FDNY RUINED, NYC*EMS, I took a supervisors class, on how to manage people. It was pretty good, and it was taught by a guy from IBM, who taught corporate execs, how to lead....... We do not need something exactly like this, but i would like to hear from any agencys that actually have an established class on "people care" Customer service, or anything similar..... If you have a link, please post up.. Thanks
  6. I tend to disagree. I have seen many military "medics" come out of the service, and go into EMS as an EMT, and then work their way up to Paramedic. I have also seen several of the more progressive military units, get their people into an NREMT-I or NREMT-P program.... So, I dunno about all the military medics, but let's just say jobs are tough all over.......
  7. O.K. What everyone else posted is true. Youare not going to get hired right out of medic school as a SWAT medic, USSS medic, or anything else "glorious". There are some jobs overseas as a medic, you can also work as an oil rig medic, that was one job I should have taken years ago... But seriously there are tons of Industrial medic jobs,as well as jobs in amusement parks, etc... just get out and look..... good luck

  10. Iconcur with paramedicmike. It took me 20 years as street EMT, I and Medic before I got the job as a flight paramedic. You could do it faster, but not by much. They like to have experienced providers in the helos. PS sounds like you do not know the right doctors, the ones i work with at GREAT guysand gals.
  11. No political cover needed, Chief officers serve at the will or the Mayor. Also 3 people died during the storm including a new born baby,, so ther were at least 3 real emergencies during the storm..... I have NO IDEA what FDNY did during this incident, but during the last big sotrm I worked in Jan 96, when we got almost as much if not more than this storm, WE had National Guard 4x4 Hummers and each station had a 4x4 plow truck, ambulances kept to the main road, and called for a boss to come ina 4x4 to plow the road to gain access to the patient, if we could not get in by plow, the Hummer went in, We also carried tow chains in all the bosses trucks, as well as the Hummers. Can anyone for FDNY-EMAS tell us what snow preparations were made during this storm ??? From where I am sitting it does not sound like a lot was planned.
  12. This is a Federal job, for a term Not To Exceed 13 months, but looks like a good way to get a foot in the door to Federal Service. Paramedic, Yosemite National Park, one of the most beautiful parks in the country. http://jobview.usajobs.gov/GetJob.aspx?JobID=94406653&JobTitle=Health+Technician+(Paramedic)&lid=17405&sort=rv%2c-dtex&rad_units=miles&brd=3876&pp=25&qt=default&jbf574=IN10&vw=b&re=134&FedEmp=N&FedPub=Y&caller=advanced.aspx&AVSDM=2011-01-03+00%3a03%3
  13. That all may be true, but the fact that they are blaming him for the ambulances gettign stuck in unplowed strrets ,, is kind of like blaming the fire dept. if the water company turns off the water in the middle of a fire and the whole block goes up........ I do not think the current replacement is much better. IMHO
  14. I usedc to work for NYC, where a Tie was required in the winter time... A tie, dragging in the patients blood, and bodily fluids as I lean over the patient. I always thought that was STUPID. Tee shirts, I think are OK after dark, usually at night, but i like a nice clean looking polo, or class C (C which is shirt no tie) uniform.. In the winder we wear work shirts, I have seen some local EMS providers arrive at calls after dark wearing tee shirts and sweat pants..... WTF is that ???? As long as a uniform is well fitting, and clean, I do not see a problem... Sweat pants ?? not so much so.
  15. O.K. For my voluntter service they Elect officers.. Became and EMT-A in 85, became a EMT-I in 86, and got LT. in 89...... Totally a voluntter thing. I was young, and around the firehouse a lot and really no one else was interested, and the one other candidate was an elderly woman, who was a bit clueless. Career: Hired in April 1987, went to Medic school in 1991, and promoted to EMS-Lieutenant in 1993......and even then when I was promoted I was one of theyoungest persons on the job NYC-EMS, to get promoted to Lieutenant. College never hurts, as do advanced training classes, but the biggest thins most systems want is for yu to be an ALS provider... Being an EMT, and supervising medics is kind of hard, especially if you have QA/QI responsibilities. Just my opinion
  16. Looking to replace the current bags we use, does anyone use this bag, and is it rugged? Does it have enough room for your ALS stuff, etc .. ? Model M4001 www.meretusa.com
  17. Courtney, I worked in several jurisdictions in NYS,, mostly in the lower counties, NYC, Nassau, Rockland, Westchester.... The bottom line is whether EMT or Paramedic, the further you get from NYC, USUALLY the lower the salaries are. As far as paid BLS, which i think is what you are looking for EMT's are a dime a dozen so pay is relatively LOW.... For Southern NY I would look for a job @ RPS, Empress, FDNY-EMSC..... There are some private Hospitals the will usually not hire a new EMT/Medic. You could also look for a private amb company, but RPS does hire BLS for their transport units... Good luck
  18. We have just been told that EMAIS is out, and the "image trend" is in. (didnt get much info from their web site.) seems no demo available. There will be an on line protocol rollout coming from MIEMSS in the future Does anyone on here use this, any thoughts are much appreciated, but I dunno how much complaining will do since it looks like they already demoed it and we are getting it.. THANKS http://www.imagetrend.com/?pid=1.5.2
  19. Waldorf is Charles Co. MD, and they have a pretty good Fire based EMS System, So I do not know what was behind the decisio to transport by POV... Whatever their decision, it seemed to work out fine.
  20. You remember a Dispatcher named Jimmy G. #823 you used to say.... " 10 Adam for the shootin, 10 Adam "... And when you jumped on the mike .. "Yeah, I dont have a shooting right now, handle this sick job...... When there were no "Battalion" based stations and: Gouve. was Sta 11 Belleveue 13 Met. 15 Harlem 18 Lincoln 21, Boston road or Webster Ave Outpost 22 Jacobi 23 Coney 31 KCH 33 Lincoln 34 Cumberland 36 WoodHELL 37 Rockaway 41 QGH 45 Elhurst 46 SI had 52 ... Ambulances were white and orange, uniforms were Green and white, Manhatan only had ONLY one radio freq. So did the Bronx and Queens.. Manhattan Disp had to switch the repeaters to here uptown vs. downtown units .... ACR's were completed for EVERY CALL. even 10-90's and 10-87'... THERE were no KDTS and the disp would read the job to you twice.... MDT's would give tones over the boro freq. THERE WERE NO PATROL Supervisors ..... I could go on and on about the GOOD OLD days before FDNY took oever and RUINED THAT Dept. city, etc. .... As a former employee i can say without reservatin, if yo want one reason to not go with aFire based model, just look at FDNY. 14 + years of broken promises to .. Reduce response time .... increase station based EMS, consolidate FD and EMS, Improve Cardiac arrest survival rate... etc.

  22. One of the other problems in the DC, MD, VA area, is that in order to become a Firefighter, you HAVE to BE AN ALS PROVIDER. I will not use the term Paramedic, because they are O.K. with EMT-I/99... So we get a lot of FF candidates who push thru the I or P class, only to land that paid firefighter job. Watching a lot of them work, they do not care about EMS or Pt. care, they just do it cause the have to.... Sounds like I'm not the only one who has these problems. Thanks for letting me vent hearing my stories, and sharing some of your experiences, sometimes i just feel soooooo alone when it comes to these things.....
  23. OK Thanks ,, I'm very close to making that now, and I'm not OCONUS in some 3rd world country.. I think I'll stay put, but it looks like it might be a good retirement job in 5 years if it is still around. LOL
  24. What state do you live in ???? ...... In Maryland, New York, and I believe Virginia, if you sign on with a volunteer FD or EMS service, most will sponser you in a Paramedic Training program, some are college based others are certificate programs......... Search around where you live and check out the options in your area. I'm sure there are some similar programs. Good luck
