  1. Near the beginning of my Basic class we were warned about DKSDIO (don't know $hit due to information overload). I wasn't very concerned as I love to study hard and was one of the best students in class. But sure enough, maybe 3/4 of the way through the class, everything I knew became one huge multicolored ball of slime in my brain. Nothing had a connection to anything else! I was hating it...all that time wasted.... One my next test I got something like 14 out of 45. I was dying....when my instructor came up grinning...."DKSDIO....don't sweat it...." I didn't and in a couple of days everything lined up in my head much clearer and more logical that it had before. It seems most people hit the same wall. Try not to freak out and I think you will find you'll come out the back much better than you were going in....just keep doing what you're doing!! I didn't use the study guides, so I can't help you there. And my way of studying is grunt labor when alone and study groups whenever possible.... Good luck to you! Dwayne
  2. Wackie, I can't help with your issue, but I would like to make an observation. If your understanding of the accident, the sequence of events and your feeling about them are any indication, you will be fine! You explained the accident, the parts relevant to you and your feelings, and the actions of those around you and how they might have contributed. There are many Medics on this site that can't express their thoughts half as well. I'm impressed, for what it's worth. If I ever get splattered in an MVA, I hope someone with your calm logic comes to scrape me up.... Dwayne
  3. Wackie, sounds like you are doing well. If you do a search on CISD (not a dig on searching, just some really good stuff in there) you are likely to find you will be happy you missed it.... Not for me to say how best to deal, I'll leave that for the experienced folks, they know best..... Good luck... Dwayne
  4. Oh...see.....that's nasty there.....
  5. Yeah, In my class.... Uniforms and dress inspections. Classroom locked 2 mins before class began. Cell phone ringing in class = instructor drop from class. (leave them in your car) There was no talking in class, no distractions...great place to learn for the kids....a little overkill if you've been a professional for a while. Pretty hardcore but 30/30 people passed skills and NR first time through. All in all, seems to beat the alternatives..... Dwayne
  6. lol...you crack me up....this idea does seem like a winner though......
  7. Most seem to have missed that this "is an assignment". Dust seems to have your best and fastest path to an A. Dwayne
  8. Nope....I'm not saying they are real....Just some are kind of funny.....There ya go..... For everyone who has ever had an evaluation - just remember, it could have been worse. These are actual quotes taken from federal government employee performance evaluations. 1. "Since my last report, this employee has reached rock-bottom and has started to dig." 2. "I would not allow this employee to breed." 3. "This employee is really not so much of a has-been, but more of a definite won't be." 4. "Works well when under constant supervision and cornered like a rat ina trap." 5. "When he opens his mouth, it seems that it is only to change feet." 6. "This young lady has delusions of adequacy." 7. "He sets low personal standards and then consistently fails to achieve them." 8. "This employee is depriving a village somewhere of an idiot." 9. "This employee should go far, and the sooner he starts the better." 10. "Got a full 6-pack, but lacks the plastic thingy to hold it all together." 11. "A gross ignoramus - 144 times worse than an ordinary ignoramus." 12. "He doesn't have ulcers, but he's a carrier." 13. Must have been pretty bad because it was missing from the list! 14. "I would like to go hunting with him sometime." 15. "He's been working with glue too much." 16. "He would argue with a signpost." 17. "He brings a lot of joy whenever he leaves the room." 18. "When his IQ reaches 50, he should sell." 19. "If you see two people talking and one looks bored, he's the other one." 20. "A photographic memory but with the lens cover glued on." 21. "A prime candidate for natural de-selection." 22. "Donated his brain to science before he was done using it." 23. "Gates are down, the lights are flashing, but the train isn't coming." 24. "He's got two brains cells, one is lost and the other is out looking for it." 25. "If he were any more stupid, he'd have to be watered twice a week." 26. "If you give him a penny for his thoughts, you'd get change." 27. "If you stand close enough to him, you can hear the ocean." 28. "It's hard to believe he beat out 1,000,000 other sperm." 29. "One neuron short of a synapse." 30. "Some drink from the fountain of knowledge; he only gargled." 31. "Takes him 2 hours to watch 60-minutes." 32. "The wheel is turning, but the hamster is dead."
  9. I tried that....maybe I should have shaved my chest?
  10. Hi all, Is anyone familiar with Pikes Peak CC Paramedic program? I have talked to the program Dir, but I'm not sure what's to keep her from telling me anything she wants....And not living in the area, I'm not sure how to investigate it further....It is on both of Dust's accredited schools lists....but it's expensive, and I would have to move to attend, to get the degree.... I'm not sure how to decide if it's worth that kind of commitment? There is a non-accredited AMR school about 20 miles up the road from me now, that is much less expensive, and obviously wouldn't require a move, but I don't want my education to be wasted. I sure could use your advice.... Thanks for your help! 11. PRPG, wouldn't it be similar to starting a union? It would seem you would need some way to strong arm your way in. Unless you could afford to pay everyone in the county until the privates would need to come to you for employees.....It sounds like it would be good for the employees in the long run...but would take some huge, brass balls!! Dwayne
  12. Yeah...I see you know exactly what I was talking about....Glad I did it, glad I don't do it any more! Dwayne
  13. Oh man....that is funny.....I thank God they didn't have tasers when I was still in my macho "I'm not afraid of anything" phase.... Great story, thanks for sharing! Dwayne
  14. When I was in Basic class we were offered remediation. Fail a test, remediate with the instructor and you change to the lowest passing grade. At first I thought he was kidding....How do you fail, yet still pass? (Thank goodness I was never in need of this service, but better than half the class I think was, many on several occasions. As the class progressed I came to understand that they did whatever was necessary to pass students into their Advanced Academy. Pretty sad that my teachers couldn't see that our failing was their failing and adjust accordingly instead of coming up with this sanctioned cheating. I do have an issue with the teacher from the article. If they are as good a teacher as they claim, why the need to cheat to make grades and gain student approval? Isn't good teaching defined by the ability to pass on information and engage students? Dwayne
  15. I was able to read the forums with no problem..... Dwayne
  16. Thanks again everyone. I have to admit I'm pretty surprised by the responses. I had assumed going in that he would be treated as combative, if not mistakenly hostile. I am amazed by how many of you are at least somewhat familiar with special needs children hands on, but also it seems like most have given some thought to this "just in case". We attempted to get him to wear a medic alert braclett when he was younger but he wouldn't tolerate it, but it is certainly time to try again. If the ems community cares enough to consider him and those like him, I will make sure they have as much info as possible to treat him with. As always, thanks for reading between the lines and answering the questions I don't know how to ask properly. Dwayne
  17. You Are a Visionary Soul You are a curious person, always in a state of awareness. Connected to all things spiritual, you are very connected to your soul. You are wise and bright: able to reason and be reasonable. Occasionally, you get quite depressed and have dark feelings. You have great vision and can be very insightful. In fact, you are often profound in a way that surprises yourself. Visionary souls like you can be the best type of friend. You are intuitive, understanding, sympathetic, and a good healer. Souls you are most compatible with: Old Soul and Peacemaker Soul What Kind of Soul Are You? http://www.blogthings.com/whatkindofsoulareyouquiz/
  18. Wow, leave it to Asys to give us another off the wall, hugely interesting, currently relevant post. Thanks Asys..... Dwayne
  19. Asys, I can't imagine the young girl in that conversation managing any type of adult responsibility, much less issues involving ethics at the Paramedic level. That post very much supports your argument. Dwayne
  20. Clever and funny! Thanks for sharing!
  21. Hey Einstein, there is not a single post in any of the links you reference that address my question...did you actually read my post, or were you to busy downloading your goofy pics? If I had wanted to read 300 post that had nothing to do with my question I would have done as you asked. Post away Ace...I'm not gonna cry and go away like the newbies you like to pick on... Have a great day! Dwayne
  22. Thanks to all. The said "program" doesn't even claim to cure autism on it's own page. Doesn't mean it's not good though...Thanks for the link..... To all....didn't mean to start an autism discussion in the scenario forum...sorry.
  23. That's pretty much what I assumed....but I thought maybe there was a magic wand..(drugs?) that could be used. Would you be able to do much of an assessment? Or just swoop and scoop? (don't remember where I heard that) Any idea from the docs or others in the know what assessment would look like at the hospital? Thanks for being blunt....having a handicapped child is challenging, not knowing what their world is like when your not there is terrifying....I'd rather know.
  24. I have an autistic son named Dylan and one of my greatest fears is that he will need EMS without his mother or I around. Assuming you came to him after a schoolbus rollover accident and are unable to reach his parents or teacher, how would you assess and care for him? I don't know enough to know what is important to include here, so I'll do my best. (Maybe it doesn't matter so much in this situation?) He has a 6cm lac at his right temple, no deformation to the skull, also a swollen and deformed right wrist. Slight swelling and bruising to right lower abdomen. His airway is patent. I would be highlighting my ignorance if I attempted rr/hr/bp/pupils. Maybe you can make assumptions as to normals for this high stress situation? He is 9 years old and almost completely without the ability to communicate to strangers. (He has some ASL (American Sign Language) but much of it is specific to him and his communication with his family and teachers) He has an unusually high threshold for pain. (For example, almost no reaction to getting his fingers slammed in a car door in the past) His motor functions are pretty standard except that he is somewhat clumsy when excited or moving fast. To most any question you ask he will answer "My name is Dylan" Ex: Where do you live, what is your name, how old are you? If you ask if something hurts he will answer "yes" to all, unless he thinks that answer makes you unhappy, in which case he will begin to answer "no" to all. He has no concept of the passage of time, or any measurable concept of abstract thought. (No when, why, how long, did you, are you, can you) In this situation he will almost certainly be either completely calm and nearly unreachable mentally or have somewhat manic behavior where he will notice almost everything to distraction. (Lets go with manic) (He will pull out IVs, fight Oxygen, etc) He hates to be touched except by his mother or myself and will certainly panic and fight against a c-collar and backboard. As his father I expect to hate any answer that doesn't involve one of our lady medics wrapping him in her arms and smothering him with kindness until I get there...(Medik8, can I put you on call for my boy?) but I'm curious to see how this would work. Perhaps it will help me better prepare him....just in case. To many of you this is probably not a big deal...been here...done this...but it seems like a horror to me, having no real world experience... Thanks to those of you that respond...and apologies in advance if this should have been presented in a different manner. Dwayne
