  1. I will preface this by saying I am a Christian and to the original point of this thread I have no issue with the signs. Your dime, do what you want with it. I don't understand spending money to celebrate what you don't believe- to me it would be like making a sign that said "the earth is no flat"... if you don't believe I don't really see the need to worry too much. The homeless shelter notion is totally different. I don't understand how someone that is not a Christian can hope to understand the belief system of Christians better than they can, but you seem to be missing something. Giving someone a sandwich or a bed is not a part of any theology I am aware of. However as a Christian I am commanded to spread the message of Christ. Thus if I can give you a sandwich as a means of telling you the "good news" then it is a worthy tool. You get the sandwich which you need and I get to tell you about my God, which I need. Everyone wins in the end, there is no harm caused to anyone.
  2. I've used a Blackberry for a long time. I got my first one in 2001 and used them until the iPhone3G came out. I drank the Kool Aid and got an iPhone and hated it. I now carry the BlackBerry Torch and love the thing. It does most of the things the iPhone did and is still as functional as the BlackBerry when it comes to email and the like. Unless your BlackBerry is a rather old phone you can use wifi to text with it as well. You have to find the app, and I cannot remember the name right now. Install the app and you'll be just like the cool kids with the iPhones. There's even Otter Boxes available for most BlackBerry phones, just not always the most secure version of the thing.
  3. I bring a little different perspective to the discussion. The OP may be gone but someone late may show up with the same thoughts in mind. The people that have been answering are medics that know their profession well. I'm not one of them. However, I am a SWAT cop and have a pretty decent understanding of that world. Before any team that I know of would consider allowing a civilian medic to work with them he is going to have to be proven in the field. We may not be the FD but we do work with EMS types on a regular basis. Unless we recognize you as being at the top of your profession don't even bother asking. However, if and when you are able to prove to us that you are in fact a great medic then get in touch with the leadership of the SWAT team(s) in your area. For the competent amazing things can happen.
  4. Thanks for the warm welcome everyone. I may be new to all of this, but it appears from the outside looking in that you all are more open and accepting of new people than we tend to be in the law enforcement field. (I am sure that isn't the case with everyone or at every place though!) I am excited to finally get to fulfill a life long dream. I just know I have to perform well or I'll have to get a divorce. If I were to struggle at some point in the class I don't think I could look at my wife and expect her to feel in the least bit sympathetic towards me. For some reason I doubt I could convince her that an EMT Basic course is as difficult as med school.
  5. I just found this site and thought I'd go ahead and sign up. I'm a new EMT-Basic student and current law enforcement officer. From talking with classmates I am not the usual EMT student. I'm older than anyone in the class, I have an advanced degree, and don't know if EMS is something I'd ever do for a living. I signed up for the class because it is something I always wanted to do. I really don't know why, but getting the EMT certification is something I've wanted to do since I learned what it was. In the back of my mind then, and now, is the possibility of going on to Paramedic at some point. For the most part it is because I want the skill set for myself. Outside of that I think I may end up applying the skills with a volunteer agency at some point in the future or I may surprise everyone and trade uniforms and go to work in emergency medicine. I blame my desire on two root causes. First were reruns of Emergency! when I was young. Second, my wife is going to be a doc in a few short months. She'll be pretty well equipped to help me if something should happen and I figure I owe it to her to be as prepared as possible to help her if something should happen to happen to her at some point.
