  1. How would you feel being a patient having someone with an infectious disease working on you...... enough said
  2. CPR is now being taught as 30 compressions to 2 breaths we call it porn star CPR because you are suppossed to do it hard and fast with an emphasis on 100 compressions in 1 minute (200 in 2 min.). And yes no more stacked shocks just go for the big one and resume cpr without checking the monitor immediately after the shock. 2 min. of cpr (or 5 rounds of 30/2) and recheck the monitor, pulse, etc. and what is needed. They started this because most cpr was ineffective in getting the right amount of oxygen and blood to the body to sustain it. so in effect you are going for quanity over quality. I know I left some out.
  3. Sunnyvale, ca. runs what they call Public Safety Officers which are Firemedics/leo so that means that you pull double duty. One day you may be on the truck the next day your running a patrol car. So more than likely the LEO that shows up is probably a Medic. This is a big city so you might want to check it out and see all that they cover. I think AMR does that actually ambulance work though.
  4. So if it is that bad and you can't figure out another way to get it done with all the student loans, scholarships, working through school ( I worked two jobs and pulled 19 credits so it can be done), moving out. Then go to the military. They will pay for the whole thing including your housing and food. Just head down to your local recruiters office and they will hook you up in no time. Otherwise take a few minutes and do an internet research for student loans and you will find it is a lot easier than you think. Good luck and don't expect to make a crazy amount of money as a medic it just doesn't happen.
  5. This is very true! But I tell you the starting pay for a medic around here with AMR (highest paid around) is $22/hr.! and for those saying that you have to have a cna or a phelbotomist license, around here they don't ask for the CNA and give you 6mo. paid to get your phlebotomist. Kaiser - Oakland is where he is working A nurse in the bay area can make starting at around 75K and go all the way up to 200K. There are a lot of nurses who live in different states and fly in for two weeks and go home for two weeks because of the pay and cost of living here.
  6. Ok so I know that this subject has been kicked around many, many, many, many times before, but I just need to vent a little! So I met a guy the other day that works for one of the local hospitals as an ER Tech. We talk about his hours and work conditions, I then proceed to ask him if he is going to become a medic and his answer back to me was why would he when he makes so much more money as an ER Tech. I was floored by this answer. I asked him how much he made and he said $30/hr.! Not truly believing him I went home and did some job hunting and found out that they start around 20-25hr. A medic here starts at the highest at $22/hr. now it only takes an EMT-Basic to become an ER Tech. I love being a medic, but that is almost tempting to do. Good hours, clean enviroment, no responsibility, and great pay. Ok I'm done just felt a little raw about it is all. If your wondering I live in the bay area in Cali. which explains the pay scale.
  7. We just get them signed off by someone who is equal or greater in licensing and then dump them down the sink/toilet. Personally I don't think it is very good way to dispose of meds that otherwise have to have a doctors prescription to obtain. Don't really like the idea of my family drinking the same water. Of course knowing where most of the water comes from I guess the meds aren't that bad!
  8. Well have to say the calls in the middle of the night in which you run code 3, running red lights, and driving on the wrong side of the road just arrive and find out that there is really nothing wrong with your patient and they just need a ride to the hospital. Just wish people knew how to prioritize their emergencies better. I don't like risking my life for bulls**t.
  9. Hey everyone, new here and this is my first post. I have been doing some research on the pay scale that we have as medics (I am actually a new medic). I have been looking into why the industry is not uniformaly represented, why because of our skills set vs. an RN we get paid so low. Most everything comes down to the fact of education. In todays society we look highly upon education. Personally I was not impressed with the education requirements that my school had. Hardly anything to get in (I had a good amount of experience but most didn't) The whole thing took under a year to get done. Its hard to expect to have respect and pay with such little education requirements. Oh and on the EMT-B subject. Heres what I think. its a great place to cut your teeth in the business and also from a business stand point it is much cheaper to pay an EMT to drive than a medic. Hope to get to know some of you and have further discussions.
