  1. I'm guessing that they're desperate for help. About 90% of EMS in Iowa is provided by volunteers. There are very few services that aren't hurting for more members. We need to get the younger crowd to start replacing the old timers that are hanging up their boots. That being said I don't think this is a smart move. I know I was nowhere near mature enough at that age to be responding to fire/ems calls.
  2. Video of a guy (sorry, not a kid) waiting for EMS while having an asthma attack. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PeehWsHKH4w
  3. I'm going to apply for the July class in '08. How hard was the application process? I'm trying to decide when would be the best time to fill out all the paperwork.
  4. King/Harbor has the 2nd busiest trauma center in the country and their ER sees around 200 cases a day. Lets say that they decide to close the hospital. Then what? Where are all these people going to go for treatment? Find the next closest hopsital and turn it into the next King/Harbor?
  5. Thanks for the help! I took my practical this morning and passed all of my stations on the first try.
  6. I'm going over the NREMT practical sheets and I noticed that the cardiac arrest station is different than the way my instructor taught it. It was his first time teaching a class, so I don't blame the guy. In class he taught us to question the people on scene, assess mental status, open airway, check for breathing, give 2 breaths, check pulse, and then start compressions. On the NREMT sheet it just mentions a pulse check and then resumption of CPR. Is that all I really need to do? He also said that they'd want to see us put in a combitube but the NREMT only mentions a simple airway adjunct, so which is it? Actually, he said to put in an oral airway early and then replace it with the combitube later on. I'm worried I'll do a bunch of unneccessary things and end up failing the station. Any help is appreciated!
  7. The things you'd learn in HS Biology. What would microbiology help you with?
  8. I'm going to be applying to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinic's Paramedic training program in the summer of 2008. I was looking at their site today to see what the admission requirements are. One of them stipulated that you have to take the HOBET anatomy and physiology level 1 exam and score at or above the national average. Can anyone who has taken the test tell me how much you need to know for the level 1 exam? Is it basic stuff or should I take a college level course to get ready for it?
  9. A friend of mine pointed this article out to me. The short version of the article is that they're going to be giving patients experimental treatments without their consent. Where do you stand on this issue? I searched back a ways and didn't see this posted anywhere, so I apoligize in advance if this is a repeat post. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/conte...2600982_pf.html
  10. A normal person is CAOx4 (person, place, time, situation). What would you put for a patient who only responded to verbal stimuli and was very confused/disoriented. You ask him/her questions and they respond with unintelligible mumbles. Are they orientedx0? Thanks in advance.
