  1. I just try to do the best I can... Most of our emergencies are usually less that 4-5 minute transports to get to a hospital... Its hard to try to treat and stabilize in that short time... I usually have to start report to the ER as soon as we get into the truck!!
  2. They were all great and hilarious :!: :!: But if I have to pick just one... RON WHITE!! He cracks me up when he starts into his drinking routine....
  3. I used to be volunteer... Then I was paid... Now I'm a supervisor for a transport company. Hopefully I will be changing that soon... I miss the adrenaline rush :!: :!: I just need to find a position that won't be a pay cut!! I can't afford another one! :!:
  4. Nothing like that here.... It would be WAY too expensive to retrofit....
  5. We have them... But I have yet to see them used. I usually end up having to clean the dust off of them... That's the only time they are removed from the cupboard!!!
  6. LOL That would be MANY people at my service.... sometimes even myself!!!
  7. AMEN!!! only, I would save ALOT more than that.... I some about a pack and a half a day! That is equal to about $6.75 a day!!! $2463 a year :!: :!: :!:
  8. I absolutely AGREE!! In PA, as an EMT, you have to do 24 hours of con-ed every 3 years to maintain your status, plus you have to go through the initial education and testing. As a Medic, you have to do 18 hours of con-ed every year. however, the certification NEVER EXPIRES!!! If you go past your expiration date before the con-ed requirements are met, you are not allowed to practice. But as soon as you meet the requirements, you can resume your position.... Wouldn't you consider a "Permanent Certification" to be a "License"????
  9. OMG!!! I NEED a training program.... The last Cardiac Arrest I worked, I thought I'd need the O2 by the time we got to the ER. I am soo out of shape. Its really pretty sad too... I just lost 50# and need to start exercising to build strength. Especially with some of the patients I have to deal with.... We have a 700# patient to transport tomorrow morning!!!!! I can already hear my back and legs screaming :!: :!:
  10. Most of the FD around here do their own Rescue work. Pittsburgh EMS also runs 2 Paramedic Rescue trucks.
  11. Most of the ER docs where I work are pretty good... I have not really had any consistent problems with any of them. Now, of course you will catch them on a bad day and they can be nasty, but that goes for everyone, myself included. The Docs around here are usually very supportive of EMS... My Med-Com Doc even wants to be an instructor for some of the con-ed classes that I am planning... I guess I must be lucky to work in a city where there are so many hospitals and doctors....
  12. AMEN!!!!!! I wish!!! We used to have a bariatric patient that lived at home in her apartment. We transported this Pt to a clinic 5 days a week. We had to carry her down 8 steps before we could load her onto the "Big Boy" stretcher. That is the patient that I got 2 lumbar strains with. I didn't get the strains lifting the stretcher.... I got them carrying her down the stairs on a stair chair. Which, by the way, she broke 9 of our stairchairs!!!! 560# :!: :!: :!: :!:
  13. I'm sorry that you feel this way. You should try to make him understand that you did not fire him because of anything personal. Make him/her understand that the reasons for termination are strictly business... Especially if you want to keep the friendship. As for the decision you made... If you feel that it was the right one... It probably was. Don't underestimate your abilities to lead and direct the employees under you. I have the same types of problems at my service. I got a promotion last year to be a Supervisor. Now all of my friends at work think that they can get away with murder while at work. NO! I have a job to do and so do they. If they don't like it...too bad, so sad. I still go out and have a good time with them, and I think that they understand that just because I moved up doesn't mean that I can't still be their friend. Just remember to keep work and personal lives separate and you should be fine. Leave work at work. Call and talk to him if you still want the friendship. He'll understand, and who knows... Maybe he'd be willing to go through some remediation training and you would be able to hire him back.
  14. INTRODUCING THE STRYKER MX-PRO BARIATRIC TRANSPORT STRETCHER Go to : http://www.ems.stryker.com/media/pdf/bari.pdf to read the specs....
  15. YEP... Bariatric is the PC term for FAT! To give you an idea.... the stryker bariatric stretcher can hold up to 800 pounds in the raised position and 1600 pounds in the lowered position. The bad part is..... We had had to use it in the LOWERED position!!!!! YIKES 1200 # pt....
  16. They bought the Stryker Bariatric stretcher, and were talking about getting the ramps and winch, but as everyone in EMS knows.... MANAGEMENT MOVES VERY SLOWLY!!! Maintenance wouldn't be a problem... He have two mechanics on staff with their own station to work in..... You'd think our units would be in better shape..
  17. Yeah, unfortunately, I smoke. I smoke too much. I have tried to quit several times with no luck. I do smoke at work, however I only smoke in designated smoking areas. And I agree.... I wouldn't be surprised if EMS is mandated to be smoke free soon.....
  18. That is very interesting... I would like to start something like that at my service, butt have NO IDEA where to begin.... Could you send me a copy or post it.....

    oxygen

there are O2 bars at the dance clubs in Pittsburgh. I've never tried it, but have always wondered what they are for.... :?:
  20. At my service, we "Specialize" in bariatric patient transports. I was just wondering if anyone else does this and how they deal with it. We have had quiet a few back injuries. I have had two lumbar strains myself, and I am trying to figure out how to prevent this in the future.
  21. I just bought a beater to get me through til I can afford to buy a new car... I have a 1981 Toyota Corolla. I also have a 1996 Pontiac GrandAm that is broken down. I love my GrandAm but I'm gonna have to junk it. My mechanic told me it'd take over $2500 to get it to pass inspection.
  22. If I feel like talking, I hit a local Pub to talk and get hammered. If not... it just builds...... Probably not the best... lol
  23. Not a big company, but we are a mutual aid company for the city of Pittsburgh.....
  24. I am an EMT-Basic in Pittsburgh, PA. I am also a field supervisor and the Assistant Training Coordinator for my service.
  25. I don't really think there is much difference... Except personal preference. I plan one day to go back to school for either nursing or PA... that is why I decided to go for the best.....
