  1. Hello everyone...I need advice if you have a few minutes to spare. I am in a bit of a predicament and need some help. Over a year ago, I put an application into the FDNY to become an EMT. While going through their hiring process, I was also applying to nursing school at my parents request. Well the problem lies in that I am accepted to nursing school (a two year program) and I also have the job offer for FDNY EMT. FDNY has been my dream for a long time, but nursing will pay more. If I go into FDNY, I have career plans to move up to paramedic, then to firefighter and move up the ranks there...so I will be doing alright financially, but in about 10 to 15 years. Keep in mind that I am only 19 years old. Please help!! Nursing or dream job?!
  2. I am going through it right now. I did my physical, background investigation, and psychological test. So all that leaves is my medical. The physical is just the first step in the process. The physical consists of four parts. The first part is the stair climb. You go on a stair master for 3 mins and 15 seconds wears a 40lb weight vest. (and you cannot touch the handrails) However what they dont tell you about that part is that they make you do an extra minute before the actual test of "practice". The stair climb has to be passed in order to move onto the rest of the physical. This part is the most challenging and caused a few people to fail in my group going through at that time. The second part, considering you pass, is the arm lift. This test requires you to exert a maximum force with the arms. You are pulling on a bar with your arms for three seconds and you do it three times. It measures arm strength. The third is arm endurance. This test involves using maximum effort to crank an arm ergometer (similiar to bicycle pedals) with your arms for two minutes. You do it once. The last part is the leg lift. This is almost the same as the second test, but this one measures your leg strength in a squatting fashion. After you finish the entire test, they tell you to call back in a few days to get your final results and they hand you a huge packet. The packet is filled with your background investigation application and is very detailed and large. A few days after the test you also get a call from your background investigation. He sets works with you and sets up a date and time for you to come in, answer a few questions and give the packet it. Around that time you also get a testing date for your psychological test. Thats as much info as I can give you because thats as far as I go. But in relation to your question on how long you have to wait, I can give you somewhat of an idea. My physical was done in the beginning of February, and they mentioned that there is a TOP class starting in July, but they doubt I will get into that, so I am shooting for the October class according to FDNY. I hope this helps and feel free to ask any more questions, I'll try to help out. Good luck! Where do you stand in the process right now?
  3. Hey all...I was at work the other day and overheard two EMTs talking about a recent call. One of the EMTs mentioned that the patient had DVD in their legs. Before I was able to ask, I was sent on a call. I have never heard of the term DVD. Did I hear them wrong? If not, what does it stand for and what is it?
  4. I have not heard of any other application and I am sure that I would have since I've gotten in this far. Sorry I couldn't be of more help! Good luck!!
  5. Ok so I just recieved my letter in the mail calling me in for the physical this Saturday at Fort Totten. Any tips or hints for those of you that went through it? And if I pass, what happens then?
  6. Hello, I registered to be a FDNY EMT in July of 2006. I recently got a letter in the mail calling me in for my physical, actually this Saturday haha. Then, considering that I pass, I believe that I have to go through psychological and medical testing and have a background investigation. I have heard that it takes about 6 months to one year to get called up for the physical after registering. I guess I lucked out and only had to wait 6 months on the list. Anyway, you can go to the FDNY employment website at http://nyc.gov/html/fdny/html/community/ems_employment.shtml . This gives information about how to go about registering and telling you about the very low salary and the benefits available. However, even though you can go to the website and see for yourself, basically you just have to call this number (718) 999-2169 and tell them that you would like to register for the EMT list. They ask for your EMT number (must be a NYS EMT. I live in New Jersey and had to get reciprocity), name, drivers license number, home address and telephone number. Good luck!!
  7. Hello all. I am going to be starting nursing school next fall at Holy Name Hospital School of Nursing in Teaneck, NJ. This program is only two years, so I graduate as an RN with an associates in Nursing. Is anyone here familiar with a New Jersey RN to Medic bridge? And if so, what would be the steps I take after graduating to become an MICN?
  8. Hello everyone. July of 2006 I registered with FDNY to be an EMT. I recently called back to get a status check to see where they were in their hiring list. Anyway, they said that I should be getting a call by the end of the month, which is great. My only problem is that I am 18 years old and go to school as well. About how much time goes by from when FDNY calls you until you actually start work? (ie getting all testing done). And is it possible to go to school at the same time as working? I have heard that nearly all FDNY EMTs and paramedics got to school, but I have also heard that their schedules are too hectic, especially with the mandatory overtime. Any thoughts would be much appreciated.
