  1. To the original poster,I to had a similar incident at a MVA. Patient was a 78 year old with poss leg fractures and the medic " her highness" had decided to call off the rescue truck, as they were pulling up on scene, and yank him thru the passenger door. When I tried to ask "why not open the door" I was cut off, reminded that she was in PARAMEDIC in charge and how dare I question her. So instead of waiting 5 minutes for the rescue to pop the door, she did a half ass job of yanking him thru the passenger door. I know what she did was wrong, but in this county, there is not a damm thing you can do about it.
  2. Yeh thats why we show up to all accidents, 20 min for pd to show up. My picture was on front page, pulling guy out of van, indept t-shirt and shorts. We did the traffic control after for about an hour.
  3. I sure hope that 33 is not too old for EMT because i'm 43 and take the test in 2 months. As for jobs, that depends where your at. Here in the rural south, I've had 3 job offers, paramedics never unemployed. Money may not be great for where you are, but 30k to 40k in the ozarks is very high pay. Hope you love this as I do. 43 and finally getting my dream job.
  4. In the EMT-B class, we were shown the mast pants, but are no longer trained on them. What they told us was that doctors didn't like them and took them out of most protacals. The 2 paramedics in class said that they DID work, and we are a rural ems, with level 1 tramas in the next state.
  5. I'll just repeat what was said in EMT class, O2, give it early and give alot. But as a basic, this is the best medicine we carry. Also, it can't hurt to give it to the patient.
  6. Is being a wanker a good or bad thing. Sure I got a mini-lightbar on my pickup. But here in the hill country, WE are the ones who do traffic control on MVA, and the lights keep me from getting hit. I have 2 fd shirts, because there the only thing close to a uniform I have. And I got my Galls catalog because I need to order my ems pants from somewhere. So while I'm a fd/ems enthusiest, not really a wanker. Here's a wanker. He wears three radio's at all times. His truck has light bar and siren. He bought a fire dept badge, which he wears on his blue vest when he works at Wal-Mart. He had been know to cry if he could not make the truck, likes to ride in them. And at the scene he always got the report box to fill out the report. He also loves to tell everyone he's a first reponder. The last call we had was a roll-over semi. One of the patients had a amputated arm. He was first on scene. He promply got out of truck, put on the full turn-outs and started to direct the non-existing traffic. He never got close to the semi at all. He had a history of doing things like this, and now no longer is on our fire deptment. He joined the town fd, where he rides around town in a old cop car. He now has a "personal" fire vehicle. This is my definition of a wanker.
  7. down here no one on the fire dept's has a "uniform". Most show up in shorts,t-shirts, jeans and old fashioned bib overalls. My vollie uniform consists of a camo hat and shirt with dept name. We have several sets of turn-outs on the truck and you use the one that fits. PS never used it in almost a year. We don't run ambulances thru the fire dept. The private ambulance crew does have a polo shirt and medis pants as there uniform. At a scenes, you can't tell the spectators from the first responders.
  8. When you wish that your dispatch was smart enough to tell you 3rd dirt road, 5Th house instead of "mollies rd" and you have no clue what that is. When the normal turn-out gear on a MVA is shorts and sandals. When they tell you to go to the good station, the one that's NOT on the dirt road. When your rig is blocked by the neighbors cows blocking the road. If the first responders are required on all calls to find the house. When the redneck in overalls, no shirt on the ATV is the fire chief. When your county maps and dispatch are so bad that the 20 mins to find the house is considered normal.
