  1. I am an EMT-B and I want to volunteer for the FDNY BLS units. I heard that if I sign up volunteering in some stations, I can take a BLS bus. If someone knows about it, please give me some information.

  2. Get hired, screw up until you're docked pay, then work a couple shifts for free. Then you'll be volunteering. Just kidding. There is no program to staff FDNY EMS BLS units with volunteers. Doing so would make the good people of Local 2507 rather upset. It really depends on which way the wind is blowing, but you might be able to put in for a ride along on a BLS unit. Go to the FDNY website, find the general contact numbers, give them a call, and then have a sense of humor as you navigate the phone maze until hopefully you can find someone who can give you a straight answer. If you have a NYS EMT-B card, a valid driver's license, and a background free of crime, you can always apply for a position as an FDNY EMT. Then you can ride the BLS unit and they'll even kick you a few dollars every so often. And when I say a few dollars, I mean just that. Good luck!

  4. Now that I know who he is, I can say he is VERY credible in the area. I know I've run into him before on the job, and I know he can make my career a living hell, or he could end my career if he so chooses. So quite frankly, I changed my tone. Checked myself before I riggidy wrecked myself, so to speak. I've been laid off before, from Ford to be specific, so I know how much it sucks to have your career ripped out from under you. Luckily, I was already past my Associate's degree and well on to my BS in Biology, knowing that the medical field was where I'd end up. People like the Taylor Fire Dept may have gone right from high school to the local community college and ended up as fire fighters. If someone told me that they were going to pay me $60k a year for a job that most people make half that, I'd be all about it. I've said it from the beginning in other forums, it sucks that the firefighters were laid off, just as much as it sucks when anyone is laid off. That having been said, when someone comes forth with accusations, especially ones that hit so close to home, I tend to go on the defensive. If Smsturms had come forward and said that he was just any old citizen of Taylor, I probably would have ripped him a new one. However, he has a first hand knowledge of the events, and has evidence to back up who he is. I'm taking a less defensive stance now, as I want to take his observations and learn from them, as well as try to correct them. If a one-month-old basic EMT can bring attention to the shortcomings in our service, then maybe we can continue to grow and provide what I see as the best service in the area.

  5. Before I continue this, I want to know who I'm talking to. Please send me a PM. I'll return the favor once I know who I'm dealing with. And before we continue this discussion further, I really want you and everyone else to know something. I hate the fact that the firefighters lost their jobs. I hate that the company I just started working for (yes, I am new to the company, a quick forum search will reveal that) is getting bad press because the citizens are rightfully angry about what's happening. I WOULD much rather see firefighters gainfully employed, no matter how much money they make (good union negotiator, for the win). On the other hand, when people start attacking the company that, as short as I have been there, has treated me so well, I get offended and I get mad. I have heard every argument against Healthlink that I can possibly imagine, and then some, including; "we're all criminals", "we hurt more patients than we help", and the worst of all, because some people actually believe this one, " we don't know what we're doing". I don't want to come off as hostile. On the contrary, I would actually love to sit down with you and talk about this, so I can open my eyes a bit. I would say let's meet up for coffee and talk about it, but I'm working 7 days a week right now trying to build seniority and hours at Healthlink, while trying to maintain enough hours at my day job for insurance coverage. I will listen to whatever you have to say, and you can feel free to PM me at will about it.

  6. Dwayne, the issue began last yr as a sign of the time cities are trying to trim the fat so to speak and cutting costs. Unfortunately, public safety is usually first to get cut along with education. The previous mayor threatened to get rid of ems as well and was very public about it. So during the election the firefighters rallied on the mayors side because he promised to keep them in place. So going back a year he threatened layoffs and wage cuts and what not, concessions were made and he still laid off 19, brought back 7. During all this there was a recall gaining momentum which the mayor ended up winning long story short firefighters won a grievance for the layoffs and the mayor was told to bring back the ones laid off but he went around city council. Now going back to the original grievance their contract states for safety in order to transport they need "X" amount of manpower so here's the vindictive part, instead of following the arbitration decision he goes ahead and gets rid of transport. See it how ya want but that's how it looks.... Sent from my PC36100 using Tapatalk

  10. It isn't a private vs firefighter issue here the issue for me is pt care the company that took over the city has control over the entire area in much the same way as amr has in other parts of the country which wouldn't be a problem had they put quality people in and not go by a meat in the seat mentality. Yea there is more to the story and the boohoo poor firefighters just isn't true these guys take pride in what they do and have a good working relationship with local hospitals Sent from my PC36100 using Tapatalk

  13. But we cannot attack you because of your beliefs or views because we don't know what they are yet. So you have that going for you at least for now, evil grin. Way to go on the written. But we do know a little about what your beliefs are though - you don't like getting attacked because of what your beliefs are. Now get out there, jump in and participate and remember, what's the worst thing you can do here, offend Dwayne, nah, he's a pussy cat, now offend the great runswithneedles and you are in a shit load of hurt.
