The site front page shows that we have 66000+ members. Why in the world does this site go 1 or so days without a post or reply? I'm wondering out loud but with 66000 members, we should have multiple posts per day, like we did in our heyday with Dust we had tons of posts a day.

It's just disheartening to see the huge decrease in participation.

So i has come to my attention that an EMT who transported my father said to another person (emt but not in same Dept) that he felt my father had too many medical needs and was being transported to the hospital too much that we should place him in a nursing home. Is this a violation of Hipaa law?

I'm concerned, where has everyone gone? I only see the same regular posters, and when a new person comes in, they see topics that have sat there for months without replies or with single or a smattering of replies.

When a new poster comes in and introduces himself/herself, they get about 5 hellos and welcomes and then that's it.

i remember this sites heyday's and I honestly believe I see the fading sun of this site. I can log in on monday and there are no new posts, on a tuesday there is a response to a post and then it will go 3-4 more days before another post is added. Some days may have 4 or 5 responses but that's it.

Admin, what are your thoughts? it's your site!! how long can you keep up with this limited amount of traffic?

I think the the so called "video killed the radio star" mantra can be had here, Facebook groups, honestly a better alternative because it's instant and everyone is on Facebook.

I put this in non-ems general discussion because, as recent events have just shown, this isn't limited to a workplace event. The information in the following two links is important to have regardless of your environment.

Active shooter events are something for which, unfortunately, we must be prepared. EMRAP, an emergency medicine podcast, has produced two podcasts discussing what to do if you find yourself in such a situation. As it's an emergency medicine based podcast the information is discussed as if taking place in an emergency room. However, the information can be applied in any setting.

Link #1: This was originally produced in 2013 and released again last year. It's a fee listen and about 30 minutes long.

Link #2: This came out this month. It's about 20 minutes long.

Thought you may appreciate the listen especially given that the guy they're talking to is a paramedic as well.

	Be safe out there.

Whether the leadership be vested in a man or in a manufactured product, emulation and envy are ever at work. In art, in literature, in music, in industry, the reward and the punishment are always the same. The reward is widespread recognition; the punishment, fierce denial and detraction. When a man's work becomes the standard for the whole world, it also becomes a target for the shafts of the envious few. If his work be merely mediocre, he will be left severely alone-if he achieve a masterpiece, it will set a million tongues a-wagging. Jealousy does not protrude its forked tongue at the artist who produces a commonplace painting. Whatsoever you write, or paint, or play, or sing, or build, no one will strive to surpass, or to slander you, unless your work be stamped with the seal of genius. Long, long after a great work or a good work has been done, those who are disappointed or envious continue to cry out that it can not be done. Spiteful little voices in the domain of art were raised against our own Whistler as a mountebank, long after the big world had acclaimed him its greatest artistic genius. Multitudes flocked to Bayreuth to worship at the musical shrine of Wagner, while the little group of those whom he had dethroned and displaced argued anily that he was no musician at all. The little world continued to protest that Fulton could never build a steamboat, while the big world flocked to the riverbanks to see his boat steam by. THe leader is assailed because he is a leader, and the effort to equal him is merely added proof to that leadership. Failing to equal or to excel, the follower seeks to depreciate and to destroy- but only confirms once more the superiority of that which he strives to supplant. There is nothing new in this. It is as old as the world and as old as the human passions-envy, fear, greed, ambition, and the desire to surpass. And it avails to nothing. If the leader truly leads, he remains-the leader. Master-poet, master-painter, master-workman, each in his turn is assailed, and each holds his laurels through the ages. That which is good or great makes itself known, no matter how loud the clamor of denial. That which deserves to live-lives."
originally printed- Jan. 2 1915. Ok friends. I need some unbiased advice. I have the first semester of NP school completed which is just general advance practice courses. I thought for sure that I wanted to be an acute care adult-geriatric NP, but now I'm not so sure. This was part of the reason I took a break and a high risk pregnancy full of complications that demanded me to slow down. My interests at this point are to continue with the acute care degree and work for a hospital group focusing on ICU patients or Certified Nurse Midwife. There aren't any ER's in this area that hire NP's so in order to pursue an advanced degree, I have to leave the ER . I'm just at this cross roads and I'm not sure how to proceed, and truth is, I'm not sure which practice area will make me the happiest in the long run.

What did you particularly not get to do in 2015 that you want to do in 2016? it can be EMS related or it doesn't have to be.

I'll start off, I have several (I'll start with a couple here) I will be happy to hit 3 of these.

1. The first one is a threefer- lose weight(to shore up my back to keep from having surgery), spend more time with my kids, and love my wife better

2. Be a better employee- to learn a new skill each month bringing my marketability to a greater level than it's ever been by August of 2016

3. To have at least 30 short devotional style readings(secular and non-secular) written to share with my friends.

4. Complete the family bug-out bags and SHTF preparations

5. Paint my house and upgrade the storage areas in the house.

6. develop a 1yr, 3yr, and 10 year goal plan.

Please keep this civil as this is a very hot button topic

Syrian Refugees - what a hot button topic -

Obama wants them to come to the USA - 10K or more if he can get that many here

27 state governors have said NO, not in our backyard

Immigration law is on Obama's side here though, the states can symbolically refuse the refugees but they cannot legally keep em out.

At least one terrorist in the most recent attack in Paris was from Syria, but the others were supposedly French citizens or from Belgium I believe - the narrative is fluiid and changing each day.

But the Boston bombers were refugee's

I have to say, I for one am more worried about the single or pair of shooters who go into the movie theater or the school and open fire than I am the syrian Refugees because they are not here yet and are not in our cities as of yet. I have yet to hear of any terrorist attacks by those refugees in the countries that have accepted those syrian refugees except France. Correct me if I'm wrong though.

But I'm on the fence here, I want to embrace the american ideal and american dream to these people but on the other hand, I don't want them here based on the off hand risk that some of them do pose.

This I believe will be the defining moment of our sitting president. It will be his swan song legacy and if there is one terrorist attack on his watch from a syrian refugee or a group of refugees, his legacy is toast and the legacy of anyone who supported him is done.

Again please keep this civil.

Hello everyone! I know this question is not going to be EMS related that's why I picked this section here. But I can not find anywhere else online to answer my question and there is one forum site for this kind of question but from me looking through it the site looks barely active haha. But anyways I am about to start a phlebotomy class at my local college. It's a multiple part course I am taking that gets our IV cert, phlebotomy cert, clinical medical asst cert, and then also our EKG cert. We come out as patient care techs in six months with job placement. So I went to the orientation for the phlebotomy class and one of the instructors said that on the second official night of the class we will start sticking each-other because we have so little time to pick up the skill until till we go to the next course. Now there's some people in the class that I wouldn't even let hand me a pair of scissors, let alone stick me with a needle. Which I hate! I am not a baby about it but I do get pain out of it. So my question to those on here that have done IV certs and that start them daily as well as draw blood, how hard of a skill is it to actually pick up? How great of a danger is it that someone will go all the way through a vein? I mean is it like something you can feel that you've successfully made it into the vein and know how to stop, or do you just sort of figure it out by the gauge needle you are using?

I know this isn't related to EMS (so sorry!) but I just figured there's people here that do this on the daily and are practically experts by it now! I'll appreciate any answers.

I've been awol for quite a while. Life has been quite interesting over the past year or so as I completed grad school and apparently dealt with existential angst. Probably a mid life crisis of sorts that resulted in significant life changes much to my poor wife's horror and pleasure. I must confess that I've been less interested in traditional EMS work and have instead focused my efforts on more naturalist and interpersonal pursuits. If I'm to be honest, I find these concepts both refreshing and interesting. Now that I may have a bit more time I may look at engaging in dialogue and being a more productive member.
