Last I heard, nobody knows who triggered the fight. As to the actual game, the final was NYPD 8, FDNY 5.
Disclosure: I was "grandfathered" in, when then-mayor Rudy Giuliani moved the NYC Health and Hospitals Corporation EMS out of the HHC, and into being a part of the FDNY

FYI, this event was at the Nassau Coliseum. Why not Madison Square Garden?

Also, a fight at Staples Center in LA was interrupted when a Hockey Game broke out.

Probably because most of FDNY and NYPD lives in Nassau or Suffolk, or because they didn't want friends arresting friends when the inevitable fight broke out.
