  1. I know there was a topic or two listed about working in Saudi Arabia. I had submitted my information to a recruiter. Ive done my research and looks like a decent job to consider. Their HR director has asked for a detailed CV after looking at my resume. I was wondering if there is anyone in here that has worked for or knows anyone who has gone to the King Fahd Military Medical Complex? My wife and I would love to go over seas for a couple of years to get a good change of scenery.
  2. Ill take crazy as a compliment... Now a days, im starting to feel as if i should encourage students to work in the field for a year or two, or three in the matter of NY. This way, they can get that "critical thinking" cap fitted to their head a decent amount, and then let them have at the NREMT. In working my way up the ladder in instruction, I look for intuitive and "crazy" ways to get students to really learn the material I am teaching. If your going to teach them, do it right the first time, and hopefully it takes. As far as the present goes, ill just help in whatever ways i can for these students short of taking the exam for them
  3. So I have a few students who have done a majority of their Field Clinical's with e for their BLS Certifications. They are at the "usual" entry level ratings, and did fairly well in their Course, and are taking the NR Exams. Now I an a NREMT, and only became NR after 7 years as a state certified and passed on the first attempt, oddly enough in the middle 50 questions. My perception of the NR CBT compared to the NY Written is NR is "reality based", best fitting answer based on the information given, and the State Written is… well, bookworm written. Many of the students have failed their first, and a few failed their second attempt, and they have asked me for help. I have been going through the many EMT test review books have collected in the last decade, and as well as "Oral Scenario Reviews". I know their problem lies in the situation based answers, and on the NR test, the "text book answer" is not always the right answer for the exam. I was wondering if their are any of you guys who might have some other suggestions on how to "drill" them to work on their "clinical aptitude and critical thinking" to help them be more ready for their next NR test. These student show excellent promise as EMT's.
  4. Not for northing, but... Didnt realize one had to… uh, take into account the date of a thread in an open forum
  5. if it were my kids, ida given the smaller one a popsicle and told her not to play on the shelves and taken the other to see the doctor on my own dime… Let the Paramedic be remediated… sheesh. FAIL
  6. 1. No gloves = no excuse 2. He assisted in unloading = made a voluntary decision to assist, but could have ended that decision after casualty was loaded out 3. The tickler… You say you went into the hall and "asked for help", and he complied… hmmm, although he does not fall into abandonment or fail to act, im gonna say that was not very "professional" to respond for a call to action and then refuse… we are all team mates here
  7. Dislocation is often associated with possible closed soft tissue and vascular damage… both of which would require possible surgical intervention… you friend care to explain why that alone does not warrant an EMS transport… not to mention your husbands lone efforts to get you to a car and transport POV… I think someone needs to inquire on a ride along….
  8. Well without giving specifics, you could just about say im from canada….OH CA-NA-DA! pfffft I love the fact that I get to work in some beautiful wilderness areas… currently working with another EMT on having Wilderness EMT Protocols authorized by a regional Medical Director… snow gets a little old after the 3rd week
  9. Based on what you described, although I would have to ask a little more… They guy could have had a VasoVagal episode and knock the noggin on the sink… Regarding the head being black…. thats where i have to ask a little more… what was his exact position, was the a particularly putrid smell? was the bathroom clean or dirty visually? Was is "black" or was it a deep purplish brown…? The dependent lividity is a fitting explanation, but ill throw a little spin on on it to be thinking outside the box… If it was truly a "black" in color, had a putrid smell, and the skin looked…. well…. swollen, and looking rather fluid filled… It could be that the tissue went necrotic from bacteria entering where the poor fella knocked his noggin…. but thats just taking it outside the box a bit…..
  10. Whats not to like about upstate? But i do have to ask what your definition of upstate is too… Too many people consider Albany Upstate… and that just isnt so…. And I hope that fish wasnt out of the Hudson...
  11. NOPE... in NY, Only thing we can honor is a "Prehospital DNR" that has no no indication of not being legitimate, and the newer MOLST forms.
  12. Ive recently learned to carry a Machete for those code patients that turn into zombie and have to put them bad boys down, my Steth is a transformers model that turns into a bazooka to blow up the somali terrorists that try to pirate my unit, and an encoder radio that has a direct line to the football to bypass all protocol and use the tactical nukes to end the world if i feel the scene is getting to funky...
  13. in 10 years of working EMS, I find it comes down to how you handle the situation. Not to sound like a cold hearted bastard, but i see no advantage to a compassion code. Old or young… if there are the signs that it is an obvious death, the best thing to do is to make the situation as it is. You have a dead body, and you have new patients to take care of… the Family. Remember the Phases of Death you learned in your EMT class, or should have, you will have to adjust to that to the surviving family. I usually call my dispatch to have a social worker be sent to the location to help the family deal as well. I have worked with many partners who believe a compassion code will make their job easier just to get it done with and not have to deal with a grieving family. A compassion code, in my opinion would be the worst thing to do. In most cases, the family realizes that there is nothing more we can do as Providers, but still have the phases to go through; and yes, that means they will go through a phase of anger… "Why wont you do anything! Do something…" To better enable you to deal with these situations, enroll in a class/Seminar that covers dealing with surviving family members of the deceased. If you talk to a social worker, they can probably put you in contact with someone they feel may be knowledgable in the sociology and psychology of such matters.
  14. Given the history of not one but two DWI's, NYS is going to be reluctant to let you test for certification. In the off chance that you provide enough support to show you have "good moral character" despite the convictions, you may be allowed to test. Getting hired… you will not get hired by any 911 or Transfer service as no agency Insurance Carrier will clear you to drive an emergency vehicle, let alone a transport vehicle. Thats just the plain blunt truth. getting work in an ER will be a longshot. m oing to have to say, your going to be better off trying your efforts in a different field. VERY few employers in the HealthCare industry are going to be willing to give a repeat DWI offender a job where people lives will be in your hands and the stress will be high… Sorry, hope you find something
  15. I havnt had a chance to look through to whole feed on this topic, but I once found EMT Trousers that had reflective striping down the full length of the legs as well as on the back pockets. Im looking for new pants, and wanted to get a few pairs of the said pants, but can not for the life of me find them now. I know i can get pants that have the reflective striping on the flaps of the back pockets and the side cargo pockets, but I think the pants with the striping down the length of the legs look sharper, especially paired with the ANSI Yellow Polo's I wear for a uniform shirt. Any one know where I can find these pants or have a supplier? Im not one to fuss on price, if they are quality materials and hold up real well in the line of duty, im willing to pay a decent buck. If not, I will look to have my mothers store tailor the pants for me.
