  1. Ok, all the old timers on this forum will more than likely agree with me and I think this is LONG LONG Overdue. Every day I see the same questions over and over and it's about time that we have some process of pointing the new members to an EMT city approved (so to speak) area where they can get their newbie questions answered. It's a big task and would require much effort but if this site is to truly cater to the new members I think this will be completely worth it. We need a FAQ or a WIKI section. A place that the new city members can go to get their basic and some more advanced questions answered. I'd like to spearhead this effort but I'm probably not the right person to really be the writer of this FAQ since I've been out of the field for a bit. But I'd like to coordinate it and edit it along with a couple other members, I'm thinking of a few members here which if this is a concept that is deemed a good idea by the members of this forum I'll PM the members I think would be great editors. I'm thinking a few of the FAQ topics would be How to become a EMT/MEdic/FF/nurse Specific State requirements for licensure Driving/licensure issues - what do I do if this happens???? Ride-alongs - how old is too young Clinicals and what to expect Class and what to expect The national registry - good bad and ugly Continuing education - what counts and what doesn't - All these can be constantly updatable and might require a good amount of editing from time to time. Admin might have the capability to provide us a WiKI on this forum or he might allow a linkage out to a specific wiki, I don't know, this is in it's infancy stage of development.
  2. What area of the country are they from? Are they by chance in the four corners region and did he get into some mouse droppings? Did he get bit or stung by something? What might he have brought with him from his old house that the parents might not have found on him, like nice pretty little pills from Grandma's house that he wanted as a souvenir and then thought they might taste yummy. Does he smell like any pesticide or chemical?
  3. donotenterwithoutpd ucallems4wht? whyisthisanemrgat3am it'sdilaudidnotdilaupid
  4. Could it be possible that Ventmedic is back?
  5. That would be a huge mistake Cad!!!!!
  6. Does not compute - What are you trying to say? And welcome to the city by the way.
  7. Ooooh this sounds like fun.
  8. They really aren't up front and honest about it. they say there's a subscription fee but they don't tell you how much and when you download the "free" app you then have to pay 70 bucks for the subscription per year and on top of that you have to purchase an additional card and it seems that every picture you take you have to use that card or what not. that seems way too convoluted in a emergency case. I might be reading this wrong, but there are just too many financial costs to this app. How many medics need to know that they take metformin versus another medicine in the same class? Not many because it is NOT going to make a difference in our treatment plans for that patient. I can see it's possible value in an overdose but I'm not going to spend some hard earned cash to get this app. Maybe if they were to come down in price. But I do see their thought process in charging something as these apps and an app like this one is probably pretty darn expensive to keep updated but once you get the base database of medications out there, and you update to the most recent version, guess what, it's out of date already due to new medications, which of course every tom doc and harry put their patients on.
  9. I just went to the Itunes store, funny how they don't show you the price of the app until you download the product. The initial product is free and then they hit you with a subscription fee. Not saying that's a bad thing, but I've looked all over their site and all over Itunes and I find nothing about price on their website. They do say there is a subscription fee required though. This is what really pisses me off about these types of things, you get a free app but if you want the real deal, you gotta get the subscription which doesn't make it free anymore. Sure the download is free but it's NOT free is it in the end. So the true cost of the app is 90 bucks for the first year. Makes me wonder what the Android version will cost.
  10. I believe Kaplan makes a pretty good study guide. Look it up. I have the EMT one but not the medic. I was using it with helping a co-worker pass the NREMT and he passed his third attempt after failing the first two dismally. It's a good guide..
  11. So your job from here on out is to get to know the guys at your chosen station, let them get to know you and if you can prove the "Immature factor and belief" wrong and show them that you have a pretty good head on your shoulders, then it's only a matter of time before you get that coveted ride along. It can be done but you are going to have to prove yourself.
  12. And your post here is a perfect segway into one of the reasons why 15 year olds are NOT allowed to ride along in most EMS systems. 15 year olds are, in and of themselves, airheaded and selfish and do things without thinking about what possibly could happen. That is what every administrator or Supervisor is going to be thinking when you approach them to ride along. Again this has nothing and everything to do with you, as well as everything to do with your age. The liability of a 15 year old on a ambulance in what could possibly be the most dangerous place in the city, with maybe some of the most dangerous people in the city and you can get an idea of why administrators have heart palpitations when they get approached for a ride along request by someone your age. Not only are they thinking of your safety but they are thinking - how much am I going to have to pay to this kids family if something - god forbid- goes wrong on scene? At least with an 18 year old or a 21 year old they are supposed to be (I SAID SUPPOSED TO BE) more level headed and mature (often times not) but there is truth in the maturity factor most of the time. Again, I'm not saying that you won't be allowed to ride but look at the situation you just went through with this girl and then put yourself in the shoes of an EMS administrator and tell me if you would want a 15 year old like your friend riding with your service. That is what the administrator is thinking when he see's you!!!
  13. If the site that hosted it shut down in 2012, is the study guide really relevant today? Or is this study guide updated to 2013 standards?
  14. Well since the OP hasn't returned, makes me think it's not that important.
  15. I am pretty sure they are right in the age range of 16. But Cad ---- why did you need to grow from this situation? If your explanation was correct and fully truthful which I have no real reason to doubt that it was untrue, you should not have to grow from this situation except to maybe realize that nearly every friend that you have in life will do something that will either piss you off or cause you to doubt your faith in humanity. And don't think for a minute that she won't do this again, I'm sure that she will to either you or another of her friends. We all do things that we regret or realize that we've F'd over a good friend. I've done it a couple of times before and always said I would never do it again, but circumstances happen. You know!!!!
  16. Have you alerted your surgeon about this new development? This might be a complication post surgery. You have enough problems already that you are dealing with, get this checked out pronto.
  17. Do you have the full name of the study guide? Maybe who it's by? That would help those who are willing to help you!!!
  18. only if Spenac is driving the ambulance.
  19. I have not heard much good about the online programs so please try to stick with the in class RN programs. More people on here will have better info than I. But I would think you would really be better going through the traditional RN programs than the paramedic to rn. Not to try to shut you down, but in my opinion most paramedic programs today do not prepare you for the RN level classes unless you have gone through a traditional degree program. Just my opinion. Let me see if where I'm located at has a good type of program.
  20. That remains to be seen. I have high hopes for you yet Kiwi!!!!
  21. On the alive note here's a little diddy I heard this morning. Well, you can tell by the way I use my walk, I'm a woman's man, no time to talk. Music loud and women warm. I've been kicked around since I was born. And now it's all right, it's O.K. And you may look the other way. We can try to understand The New York Times' effect on man. Whether you're a brother Or whether you're a mother, You're stayin' alive, stayin' alive. Feel the city breakin' And ev'rybody shakin' And we're stayin' alive, stayin' alive. Ah, ha, ha, ha, Stayin' alive. Stayin' alive. Ah, ha, ha, ha, Stayin' alive. Well now, I get low and I get high And if I can't get either I really try. Got the wings of heaven on my shoes I'm a dancin' man and I just can't lose. You know it's all right, it's O.K. I'll live to see another day. Life goin' nowhere. Somebody help me. Somebody help me, yeah. Life goin' nowhere. Somebody help me, yeah. Stayin' alive
  22. Good God man, have you seen the safety records of those Ospreys, it's harrier or nothing
  23. Well we have determined that there are definite issues involved in using the Harrier for EMS Evac. It seems that the envy of the fire department in my having this for just such an occasion has prompted many fire departments to apply for the HAEMSEG grant program (Harrier Advanced EMS EVAC grant) which is a very very little known federal grant program. It has been hampered by many government regulations and also was furloughed for 13 days in October so rest assured, the grant money is out there, but due to sequestration, it's not available right now. So long story short, I'm not comfortable using my harrier because of the envy that the fire departments have towards my Harrier. I only use it right now for personal, off duty stop on the side of the road EMS scenes. If it was an expectation that they would get the Harrier, then the envy would be gone.
